Printing on transparent film

Hi

I was wondering if you could help. I inquired about buying an ID card printer for printing IDs but I have come to conclusion that its way outside my budget.

I have come up with a solution. I've decided to print on transparent film instead and stick it to old pvc cards and voile la, massive savings.

However, I'm not sure where to source such equipment and would like to know if a normal printer will do the job or will I require a special one.
