It's certainly been a very eventful, controversial and influential year for Merkel. She deserves the award on that basis.

I've also had an eventful, controversial and influential year. Where's my award?

Considering that the short-list included people like "Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic terrorist group known as ISIS; Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump; (...) and Iranian president Hassan Rouhani", I'm not sure how much of a compliment that actually is.

That was Moustache of the Year, and the other nominees dropped out.

The criterion is "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill". It's not meant to be a compliment.

Isis only came in second. That will piss them off. But at least they were ahead of The Don.

    Stalin won it twice! STALIN!

Anyway fair play to Angela, she's the 4th German Chancellor to win it starting with Adolf Hitler in 1938.

I would rupture her anus in a celebratory manner, then parade down a small Mexican town on a donkey's back.

Considering the main man of ISIS was also on the short list, she was in good company.
