Garmin Device Recognition

    Hi Guys,

Have an edge 500 and 705 and notice that when I connect them to the laptop for uploading activities (I do manual uploading) the amount of time it takes to recognize the devices varies a lot.

Sometimes they are not recognized at all and I have to plug them in and out a few times (trying different USB ports) until they are. Other times the recognition happens straight away. I have seen the same behaviour with a friends garmin too.

I don't have this problem with USB keys and as far as I can tell the storage devices on the Garmins should behave in the same way... i.e. they both use standard USB Windows storage drivers.

Anybody notice this as well or have any ideas what may be going on ?

    Thanks.

Sometimes my computer will take a while to spot that the garmin has been plugged in, I never really thought about it unit l saw this.

Are you ejecting it before you unplug it? I know with sticks and hard drives my computer takes a while to see them if they've been yanked out without ejecting them the last time they were removed, I think it re-indexes the whole thing before making it visible to you, which is it basically making a mental note of all the files on the device, so when you do a search on the computer it can cough up the results quickly

I have the same with my Garmin, sometimes it recognises it instantly, others Garmin Express can be sitting there twiddling its thumbs while trying to discover it.

I don't usually do a software eject, suppose because with normal memory keys it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Will try in future thanks to see if there is a noticeable difference.

I do see messages the odd time where windows offers to repair the garmin disks or suggest reformatting. I usually ignore them as once it recognizes the device I can always upload.

I've had the same issue. As far as I can tell it's windows thing rather than a Garmin Express thing. I've had it with a older edge 500 that was dying and with a refurbished replacement unit. Generally the laptop recognises USB keys quickly enough but not the Garmin. I have found that the occasional restart helps - I tend to leave the laptop on for weeks at a time and I think this has some sort of effect. Mostly I just leave it sit there until windows tries to open the Garmin as a data key. Once that happens I usually manually load files to strava etc as garmin connect/express is pretty poor.

Had similar problems with the 500 but no problems with the 810.

Have you tried using a different USB cable?

^^ What 07Lapierre said. I have loads of USB cables and certain ones are better. Some don't even load the 500. The garmin one supplied has "garmin" stamped on it.

You should always "Eject" a Garmin too. It's not a USB stick and it stops Windows saying it's found a problem with the device next time you plug it in.
