Ive been a big critic in the past, but on reflection, the work of the investigations unit, particularly in relation to the recent councillor money grabbing bástard scandal, and also that care facility a while back; are a decent public service. Along with the excellent sporting coverage, and the saorview platform; i will have no problem paying the tv licence next time the bill comes in. Fair play to them, along with An Post, its one of the few public institutions to be proud of in this country

I'm looking forward to seeing Wimbledon, the US Masters and the Tour de France on their excellent sporting package.

If it ain't rugby or GAA, they have no interest. In fairness to them, they have to do a cost benefit analysis. But that leaves the coverage pretty substandard IMO.

And their rugby coverage is pretty poor to boot.

TnaG does the cycling I think.
Can't expect them to compete with Sky in all fairness . Didn't the BBC even lose the Open?

TnaG used to have a few good ones, T de F, Wimbledon, think French Open etc.

Oh don't expect RTE to compete with other stations. It can't, hence it's far from excellent sports coverage.

    How so

Does D4 rugby fanatic Ryle Nugent head up RTEs sports department AND appoint himself commentator for rugby matches? It's like the kid who owns the football being captain.

It will cease to exist from 2018 when the 6-nations goes to TV3

A shambles of an organisation that should be left to sink or swim by itself. Throwing people in prison to keep the Montrose jet set coked up to their eyeballs doesn't deserve a "fair play".

    How so

Halftime on Sky: "Well, Saracens have really pressed their advantage at the scrum with twelve points from penalties. Tonga'uiha's really suffering out there: ever since the change to the engagement he's lost the brute force advantage he used to have, and with the front rows engaging higher than they used to he can't impose himself on the opposing tighthead. It's not all bad news for Racing, though: their blitz defence is stopping Sarries from crossing the gainline and Owen Farrell hasn't been kicking accurately enough to pin them back."

Halftime on RTE: "There's no bite or passion in this performance. Calling these messes scrums is an insult to the great front rowers of the 1950s..."

Oh hes a great troll alright, I love the way is so dedicated to trolling that he incrimates himself several times and is now likely to loose his job and probably going to get a conviction. He should be nominated for the top 100 trolls list, which would also feature dedicated trolls like Al Capone, Richard Nixon, Charlie Haughey etc

I hate the over analysis that takes place on the likes of sky, much rather someone with a bit of personality over some "expert" fiddling with a touchscreen.

The greatest trick RTE ever pulled was convincing people their sports coverage was good.

It's absolutely dreadful for the most part.

I think stars like Lottie Ryan, Ray D'Arcy, and Ryan Tubridy make RTE. more talented bunch you wouldn't get anywhere else.

Careful now, don't say things you can't take back!

Different strokes for different folks. RTE coverage is horribly uninformative, though. If you're not going to tell us anything about the game, can you just stick on a Dara O Briain clip for halftime instead?

Half time is normally filled with ads, time for a quick prediction and back to the match.
    Very good either end though.

Is the tour de France a sport again? When did that happen? Wimbledon and the tour are both on Irish tv anyhow.

Well they're not as bad as TV3

Yet, not as good as TG4.

    Weird.

Still, a world full of TV3s would be very, very sad indeed.

I wouldnt be a fan of sport but id say its possible to go through a full week on RTE without having any sport broadcast except for the slots on the news.
God be with the days of Sports Stadium on RTE2 where you got 5 hrs of various sports every Saturday.
Horse racing, English football, rugby, tennis, snooker, motor racing, GAA, handball, athletics, irish basketball, and results of days fixtures and analysis.
