Replace Sky modem

Hi,

I have the following Sky modem :

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/networks/wireless-routers/1403638/sky-hub-review

But I think it's crap

- wireless range is bad......and I have changed the channels
- seems not able to handle high speeds.

Mine is setup as in the attached picture and the setup on the left of the picture. i.e. I have a Pre-filtered master phone socket

I was thinking of buying a TP link box as these supports 802.11ac wireless and just seem better.

Question is

Would the TP link box totally replace the sky box ?

Or

Would the sky box remain and just plug an Ethernet cable from sky box to TP link box ?

Or

Is it even possible to use a TP link box with the sky setup ?

Sorry for my ignorance, any help greatly appreciated.

Went sky broadband from Eir 2 weeks ago, works fine.

Do the basic checks, speed at modem ( should run at same speed as any other modem as its the line into the house that limits speeds AFAIK ).

Put modem away from radiators and anything else that can affect radio transmissions.

If wireless connection is only problem, look into getting something like a TP network that runs over your mains circuit, put one into the father in laws apartment 4 weeks ago because UPC/ virgin box wireless signal was weak to his home office, works fine now.

I've done all the basic checks alright and not beside radiators etc.

Tried then tp network over mains for wireless and not great which is why I was asking my about the to modem.

Edit : I have them exact power adopters that you linked from currys. I have got them setup right as spent 30 mins on phone to TP link helpless to make sure all was ok.

Edit 2. : correction to above. I have this adapter :

Just put an Ethernet cable from PC to TP Link and cable from modem to TP Link and run over Ethernet on the mains

Thanks. But I know all this but that's no use with tablets and mobiles. And the wireless clone thing on this is crap.

If I recall the FILs install correctly, then Ethernet from modem to first TP link and find the network from the 2nd, worked OK in FILs but decided he was better off on Ethernet at both ends.

Did have a problem at home with the wife's Galaxy phone where everyone else could get a signal but not her phone, no option but a new phone for xmas.

Anyone else have any comments on this

I.e. Can the sky box be replaced with a TP link box or can it work alongside the sky box ?

It's against Sky's terms and conditions to use your own modem in place of theirs. Some people have gotten it to work but you have to jump through hoops to get the PPPoE username and password.

Thanks for reply.

Right so could be a pain. Does any other provider allow you to use your own modem ?

Yes, Vodafone and Eir do but they can't provide any support. So if you have any problems you'll have to reconnect their modem before contacting support. Which isn't the worst thing in the world mind you. :) Better than Virgin Media and Sky's attitude.

Thanks.

And to get this working with Eircom or Vodafone, do you have to do anything funky or know any special passwords etc.

Eir is simple, use eircom@eircom.net as the username and broadband1 as the password.

For Vodafone, you need to retrieve your username from the modem's interface, it's usually something@vodafone.ie. Password is broadband

If on VDSL (e.g. eir fibre), set the VLAN ID to 10. But your modem must support VDSL vectoring, otherwise it won't work.

Thanks. Can you recommend a modem for this job and that also supports 802.11 AC wireless ?

I second this; the sky router is rubbish. The Zyxel off Eircom a while back had better range. The Sky router has less range and it drops when there is multiple devices on the network.

Oh ok. So is the modem that Eircom supply a better quality than the Eircom one ?

If so, I may switch to Eircom for this sole reason.

I swapped out a tp link from skys own router. Improved stability and range.
There's various posts online showing how to use wireshark to source the password which is what I did and once got, set up was straight forward.
If you're in Dublin I still have the tp router I'm not using any more if u want to test it for yourself

Should note its a dsl non fibre router
The terms and conditions referred to just means no support on a non sky router

Do you know if the Eircom supplied modem is a better one than the sky supplied one ?

D1000 is middle of the road. Not the best, certainly not the worst.

Don't change ISP to get a better modem, buy decent third party kit.

But is it better than the sky hub I have now ?

Getting a 3rd party kit will cost me a nice bit of money. Changing providers not so much.
And a 3rd party kit with sky seems to be tricky to get working.

The sky hub I have is super-****.

Was just on to Eircom, the modem they are offering now is the zyxel f1000

Any comments on this?

They aren't.

ADSL users get a D1000, VDSL get an F2000.

F2000 is very good as ISP equipment goes.

Hi, what do you mean by: they aren't

how do I know if I would get an ADSL or a VDSL box ?

They aren't issuing the F1000 anymore, it's the F2000.

VDSL if you're on a so-called Fibre service, ADSL otherwise.

The signal is poor, it's 100mbit lan ports, wireless g(54mbit). They will slow your internal networking stuff down if you care about that, I personally do, which is why I called my sky hub awful.

So if she's saying the eircom one is mid-range, it has to be better than this.

Anyone know if this sky hub is due for a new model / replacement ?

If they do real fibre from either eir or siro they'll have to, as it's barely good enough to deliver the efibre 100mbit internet to a lan-connected device.

So given how slow they were to offer efibre, it could be a year or three yet.

Are you sure on this ?
Does the F2000 box support the faster wireless protocol ?

I've seen several F2000s in the field for new customers. I don't know if it supports AC but it does have simultaneous dual band (2.4/5.0 GHz).

2000 does support AC. Its a far better unit than the 1000(Zyxel, not Huawei).

Good. Sounds like the F 2000 is a way better box than the one sky offer.

What qualifies you as being VDSL...........is it something like if you can get speeds of greater than 50 Mb, you are VDSL and anything less it's ADSL ?

Not speed, technology. ADSL goes from 0.128 to 24Mb and VDSL from 4 to 100Mb.

They're both based on DSL.
VDSL is a newer/better form than ADSL

Hi,

In the end I went ahead and changed to Eir and I got the F 2000 box.

Just regrading the dual wi fi and roaming around the house with my iPhone. I have the 2.4 G and 5 G option with this box.

I have entered the password for both etc.

Lets say I am upstairs and far away from the modem and only on 2.4 G, when I move down stairs and closer to modem, will I automatically connect to the 5 G OR do I have to manually connect to it each time.

I have an iPhone 6

See attached image.
