I'm a sixth year student and I'm interested in this course, I do art Dcg construction and biology in school. Drawing and all that is not a bother but I wouldn't be good at coming up with ideas! Just wondering if any students on the course would have any info on the course and would you need to be good at coming up with ideas etc.

Any info on the course would be appreciated thanks!

I don't do the course but I have a friend who does so I know a little bit about it.

Yes, you do have to be good at coming up with ideas from scratch. One project they had at the start of the year required them to have 50 or so unique sketches before they could finalise it. Given that you do Art, DCG and Construction you will be able to develop this skill over the coming months. If you enjoy those subjects, you'll love the course. Keep in mind that the workload can be intensive at times but it seems like a rewarding course.

My housemate does the course, so I know a lot about it.

Creativity is incredibly helpful for this course, but a lot of the projects you do are all group based and so you can build on each other's ideas.

The hours of the course can be a bit long once you hit third year (9-4/5 everyday), and the majority of your work is continuous assessment after first year, which means very few exams. Your course will have their own drawing studio that only PDT students use, and you have access to your own computers and printers etc. In second semester of third year you also get the opportunity to go on co operative placement, where you go out and work with a company for nine months.

Hi Clodagh6, im in second year PDT myself in UL.

iLaura is correct having a good sense of creativity certainly does help (but its not essential) as you are required to come up with potentially working designs (they dont actually have to work but in theory they should!) In 1st year they focus on getting the foundations of design drilled in, which means lots and lots of drawing.... Projects in 1st year are usually 3-4 weeks long that all focus on you developing your drawing skills, presenting your ideas to lectures/your class and creating prototype models of your designs.

You said yourself you wouldn't be good at coming up with ideas, i really wouldnt worry about this because before every project you have to do research and from there ideas are usually found pretty quickly. The more projects we do the better you get at thinking of design ideas.

The hours are long yes and the workload can be overwhelming at times but if you keep working away all semester its not too bad, just dont let it all build up!

It is a hard course theres no doubt about it but it certainly is enjoyable.

theres an open day on the 16th of january which might over more help as you will be able to talk to some lectures and see what facilities we have.

if you still want to know more about it dont hesitate to private message and ill be more then willing to help out :)
