Hey all, currently driving a 2007 bmw 5 series, €710 a year on tax and quite heavy on diesel, Ive seen a few range rovers on donedeal that have been converted to crewcab tax if €330 a year and am thinking of switching from my bmw to a range rover. Im aware it would be heavier on diesel but id be paying less than half the tax I am now a year, would it be worth it ?

I'd like to know how a 520d is heavy on diesel? They're pretty much one of the most economical cars in that class at the time....

You might save a few hundred in tax costs but what will it cost you to change upto a Range Rover with RR type servicing, tyres and general maintenance?

I think a few numbers on paper will tell you what you need to know. You'd be utterly mad

If you are thinking of same year model thanks to the interweb good parts are easily sourced for the RR. To be honest you are in the frying pan fire situation.

well my 520d is automatic so its that bit heavier on diesel, I wouldnt be sending the range rover to a dealership for servicing or anything, and i cant imagine it would cost much more than my bmw does to service with my mechanic, also each tyre on my bmw costs 200euro so the range rover might even cost less on tyres

    710-330 is your initial saving.
Now factor in possible increased insurance as you now need commercial insurance and a genuine reason to insure it to satisfy the insurance company.

520d averages 35-40mpg in the city, there's a pre lci and an lci in my household.the range river will average 20mpg (we have an 08 one here as a limo). So work out the increased fuel you will now use.

Tyres for the 520d can be got for way lower than €200 but I suppose they won't be run flats.

Tyres for the jeep can also be sourced cheaper. Pro parts priced my 19" wheels on the ML at €150 per corner for mid range tyres. Can be got for €120ish for budget.

Now add in the yearly CVRT at €130 as opposed to the NCT at €55.

As above, put the figures down on paper and I would be astonished if you will save money with the RR.

I was going to get cheaper non run flats for the 520d but id have to get new ones all around, and I normally change the front and back ones at different times, good to hear that the tyres would be cheaper on the RR though as there the most annoying aspect of the 520d
I wouldnt really expect to be saving money by buying an RR but Id say if I could end up spending about the same, or just a small bit over I would change just for the added comfort and room, always have wanted one

Honestly, Range Rover and crew cab shouldn't go together. Range Rovers are fashion statements, hence the association with Vogue.

Anyone who sees you in one with the blacked out windows and no back seats know that you can't afford the real deal. So there is no brand cachet.

If you buy a crew cab, buy it to do some work.

I wasnt talking about a crew cab with no back seats, theres RR's up on donedeal that are crew cab and have full front and back seats also ....

The problem with the RR and the E53 X5 amongst others is that they don't strictly comply with crew cab regulations. A lot of them were converted quickly after the rules came in and my dear would be that in a few years they do another clamp down similar to the 3.0 litre down as 2.0 litre on the book.

I've been into companies trying to get an X5 done and every one of them say no, it can't be done and should never have been done either.

if you consider the 5 series hard on fuel dont think your going to stomach the current 22 mpg our rr gets 3.0 td6

Note that you will not be able to tax the crewman without a VAT number

And you may well run into problems with insurance if you have the vehicle declared as commercial for tax purposes bur not insurance

    Total false economy really

This is untrue, may be the case in some counties but not all.

Edit: No county council can refuse you tax commercial if you dont have a vat number.

You could makke a nice pickup out of a long wheelbase one, if you had a lot of motorway driving to do

Start with the convertible, few sheets of plywood & tec7 and you're sorted

If you can afford €200 a corner for tires, I dunno why yer looking to go for a "crew cab" RR to save a few bob... That's a grey area(crew cab wise) it'll cost more in the long run. Or maybe you haven't replaced the tires yet? €80/90 a corner will get quality tires. RR won't save you money. Get a crew cab transit, boss.

I have a commercial (crewcab) currently which I cannot tax or insure commercial as I am not using it for commercial purposes.

Although the OP hasn't specified their intended use for the crewcab, and I can only presume that it will be private and I am just pointing out that they may very well run into problems like I have. Some tax offices will let you away with it some won't.
