What are your In Case of Emergency (I.C.E) tips?

This might be a bit of a morbid topic, but if you are involved in an accident, knocked unconscious or unable to communicate in some way, and need to pass on information to emergency services, what can be done to ensure that relevant information, such as medical information and next of kin?

I've got numbers identified as I.C.E in my contact list on my phone, but it doesn't account for the fact that you'll still need to enter in a code to unlock my device, which I wouldn't be able to pass on if I couldn't talk.

There is a way on your phone to add them to the emergency call screen so your phone does not need to be unlocked.

EDIT - here's a decent article on it, looks like SIRI can call your ICE from the lock screen as well.

There are similar for Android and apps you can get as well.

I know there's something on the Home Screen for "Emergency Calls", but I have no idea how to add anything into it. You can enter in Owner's Info on the homescreen, but I don't like the thought of my emergency contact's being displayed on the homesceen openly.

If only you could carry some form of information on your person other than a phone.

Perhaps on some paper in your wallet. Lets hope, some day, that technology will allow for that.

I got my Mam to stitch my name and address into a label on the back of all my jumpers.

On the iPhone, you use the medical ID (configured through the Health App), it's not openly displayed on the home screen. You have to go into Emergency then Medical ID to list your own details you want to disclose and the number for your I.C.E.

My other idea was to laminate a short sheet and keep that in a card slot on either my phone case or in my wallet.

A wallet might be the first think a paramedic would check alright so that should work. Would also be handy if you ever lost it.

If you're in a crowded place and an accident occurs and you're tending to the victim; don't assume that somebody will call an ambulance.

Literally point at at someone and tell them to call an ambulance. This prevents the diffusion of responsibility over a crowd which often leads to so called "bystander effect".

If you go into your contacts and select lets just say your mam, go into her details and when you hit the menu button you should have an option to add them to I.C.E. contacts.

I haven't got any numbers flagged as 'ICE', and I've moved house three times since I last renewed my driving licence. They could probably identify me through my car registration or my bank cards.

    Or my dental records.

I have people that ring around the hospitals when it happens

I never see the point of prefixing contacts with ICE.

Firstly it makes using the contact more awkward and secondly how are emergency services to access it.

Anyhow the health app on the iPhone as mentioned works a treat and clears both problems. Should really out something in my wallet as phones might not always survive accidents.

I have a road ID when out on the bike listing name, Dob and 2 emergency contacts. Just in case my wallet gets lost in the course of whatever has knocked me unconscious.

Otherwise I've never heard of emergency services having a particularly difficult time identifying someone who's been killed.

Dead homeless people are tougher because they rarely have ID and their friends unwilling to engage. Like that poor fecker pushed under the bus a couple of years back. His face was unrecognizable and he had no ID on him.

On android. When your home unlock screen comes up. Select "emergency call" on the bottom of the screen.

A keypad will pop up. Under the * key there's a symbol of a person and a flashing siren. Click that and your ICE contacts pop up.

Obviously you're relying on the emergency services knowing this but I was shown it at a first aid course so they should be shown it and you have to set up the contacts in the "group" section of your phone book.

Yeah, no. Just get me to a hospital and try fix me.

But OP does have good point, makes sense to have 'home' or something as emergency contact.

I've got an ICE number on the phone. When I had an accident I'm guessing no-one could access it due to the PIN. It took them a few hours to track the wife down. I'm guessing it was a garbled message in the hospital that eventually got the info through. I say guessing as I was unconscious for 30 mins and can only remember isolated incidents later in the day.

It was a cycling accident. It happened in a race and they've now changed the rules so you must provide emergency contact details when signing on to an official cycling event. I've also got the number located on the bike, but it would not be the first place anyone would look.

ICE, change your knickers/underpants everyday because you never know when you might be in an accident and be brought to hospital. You don't want the Doctors and Nurses seeing an skidmarks or 'stains' on your underwear.......said every Mammy and Granny....ever.

I detest gin,but do have an almost full litre of bombay sapphire stashed away for 'in case of emergency' situations.I also carry one of those new fangled wallet thingys, they'll probably never catch on. But I find them handy for carrying identification, cash and cards.

I think all iphones now come with a MEDICAL app thats automatically on your home page - in it you fill in blocks titled : Doctor, Allergies, Prescription Medicines, Blood Type, Organ Donar - All laid out & super simple for emergency services to find & quickly read. You can't delete it & it comes free.
    They should promote it more!

Its a red heart on a white square.

It also has lots of other useful & handy stuff which I never bother with!

In my late teens I got hit by car having just returned from a week's camping.

I remember having two very clear thoughts immediately after the impact- one related to a football match I was due to play; the other to the week old jocks I was wearing!

Always make sure you have a spare pair of brown trousers on hand.

I wear a pair of military style dog tags with my name, d.o.b, blood group, that I have no known allergies and that I am a tissue/organ donor.

I also have a small laminated card in my wallet with my photo, address, d.o.b, blood group, no allergies, tissue/organ donor and 2 emergency contact names/numbers who know my wishes with regards to tissue/organ donation.

On my (Samsung Android) phone I have the same emergency contact names/numbers which can be accessed without the need for my PIN and also my lock screen has my custom page with my name, d.o.b, blood group, no allergies, tissue/organ donor and my primary emergency contact persons details.

So I am pretty covered :)

A part of me would rather not be identified straight away were I in an accident.
I'd hate to think of my family or boyfriend getting a call to say that I was mangled and on the way somewhere in an ambulance with very sketchy details. I feel sick even thinking about it.
I'd much rather the process be delayed until I could either call them myself, or someone call and say "she's had an accident, but she'll be ok". Or not, but I'd like definitive news to be delivered, rather than "she's a bit fcuked up".
