My Sons 2001 Corolla 1.4 vvti Liftback is due for NCT. He has a problem with the rear Fog light. When he pushes the button the light on dash comes on but goes off when button released. I have tried several breakers for a switch to no avail and told by most that they are weak. My neighbour a mechanic suggests it may be a relay. I have ordered a new switch but in the event that it is a relay does anyone know location of the relay.

I wouldn't have thought that's be used enough to wear out. its not a mechanical swith. i think the 99-03 yaris might use the same button.

I might be wrong here but as far as I know I the swith is taken out it won't fail an nct.

Does the rear fog light stay on or does it go off as well?

Relay position should be in the manual but from a quick look online, appears to be in the engine bay box. That said, very strange if the fogs were operating normally and the relay was banjo'd.

I'm not certain that there's a separate relay for the rear fog.

Yeah a Yaris would have the same button.

Remember, when looking for the button in a breakers a a car with front fogs wont have the button becuase the rear fogs switch will be on the light stalk then.

yeah the facelift 03 had it on the stalk as did some of the corollas I think.

Would seem very odd to have a relay for such a low powered, single circuit bulb alright

Thanks guys for suggestions as far as I know the fog light switch is on a small panel to right of steering column alongside mirror adjuster. My son says as long as he keeps finger on the switch the fog light works but when he lets go the light goes out.Toyota garage said Fog light switch on the liftback is not the same as the saloon the pin arrangement is different. taking what my Son now says I would suspect the relay and would like to know its location.

The thwo potential places are the fuse box under the bonnet or in the passenger footwell kick panel.

It could still be the switch. Id say it's all self contained, I know its electronic and resets when you turn the car off.

Press the button and listen for a click

I don't mean to state the obvious, but you know it's not meant to work unless the other lights are on - probably has to be headlamps with dipped beams.

I doubt if its the relay as if it was not activating, the fogs would not light up at all.I recon its the switch. As was mentioned earlier, try to find where it is along with other relays, and listen for a click when you press the button. If you hear that, then its not the relay.

That's if it has a relay for the fogs

    It will fail.
    ITEM - REASONS FOR FAILURE
    Rear Fog Lamp
1 Lamp or switch not working or faulty.
2 Missing or not clearly visible.
    3 Not red in colour.
    4 Lens broken or missing.
    5 Insecurely mounted.
6 Fog lamp indicator not working correctly.

All vehicles type approved in EU since late 80's must be equipped with rear fog light, and it must be working for NCT.
Only vehicles imported from outside EU (f.e. Japan come without it) and then it wont' be a reason for failure if it's not there.

Ok guys a happy ending to the fog light problem. I got a new switch and in the mean time my Son rang to say he had no dip on either headlight and main was ok. I brought the new switch to him and when we fitted it all came ok Fog light ok and the Dip was back. Thanks for all replies and suggestions. Now for the NCT to night. As a by the way a Guard stopped my younger son on his motorcycle and after telling him off for not having tax disc on bike instead of in his pocket though son told him it would be taken off the bike. The guard then asked him for his NCT cert my Son laughed and was threatened with arrest he asked the guard Did he know what NCT was the guard replied of course National car test. My son pointed at his bike and said if you had not noticed that's a Motor bike not a car. The guard did not know what to say and walked away
