I'm looking to install an inset milti-fuel stove to replace a natural gas fire. The fire sorround is a solid piece of granite as is the hearth - ie no joints. Its been suggested that I will have to replace at least the sorround, but possibly not the hearth, as the sorround would crack due to the heat.

Could I get some neutral views please,
    thanks

First have you got a real chimney or is it just a flue running up
The hearth and the surround will both crack and need replacing as they are designed for heat of up to 200 degrees
Solid fuel can go around 400 degrees
