Should I replace my battery?

2010 Focus. Went away for weekend, car wouldn't start this morning. Could have been a draw from a cigarette lighter for a dash cam. Jump started it this morning (thank bro :D) and it started fine by itself at lunch time.

No idea if it was replaced before, but unlikely. Car battery life span ~5 years, so thought may be time to buy a new one? Micksgarage seems to have good pricing. Replace, and if so would this one seem acceptable?

    Thanks

Best replace before we get any proper cold. 5 years is decent going. Just go into a motor factors and buy there, I wouldn't bother ordering online, and surely the postage would be nuts given the weight?

Free delivery from micksgarage. Would the batteries be broadly the same from a motor factor? Any brand I should be looking out for?

Rang local, seem to have one available for same price.

Most motor factors will load test your battery, if it needs replacing they usually fit FOC.

Yes replace it, nothing worse than having a car you don't know whether it will start or not. This weather is a massive drain on a battery and an old one just won't hold up.

    75. Online price from micksgarage was more than that, so happy to be getting a decent brand from a local place. Seems fairly easy to replace in the focus too, so will by relieved to have it changed.

Make sure you buy calcium battery(yuasa silver, halfords calcium, etc) assuming your focus has smart charging system. That was the conclusion of my research when I was buying one for 2005 mk2.

If you go to a factor or Halford they will change it for you and dispose of the old battery too.
Also you will be certain it's the right battery (well, pretty certain..).

Don't bother with online, it's not worth it. Go local.

i got 12 years out of the one i had in my golf before it failed.
    It was a varta.
A replacement varta from a main dealers at the time was 50 euro.
A check on micks garage is showing batterys that are 95 plus.
Bosch are a good battery too

Current OEM battery has lasted ten years.
I left the parking lights twice last year while at work and flattened the battery, but after a jump start and a bit of driving it was revived.
I thought I might have to replace it but it didn't seem to have had any ill effects.

Went to local motor factors and price had gone up from 75 to 100. Will go to a larger motor factors in Limerick on the weekend. Would they really change it for me? Can do it myself, but if they're willing...

We can not vouch for every factors but several I know do, and all of Halford branches do.
Bring your tools to do it DIY outside the factors in case they are too busy to hep you.

Frank Hogan is doing deals on batterys at the moment
    44ah for 50
    61ah for 70
    72ah for 80
    85ah for 85
    All including vat.
Not sure of the makes though.

FYI car batterys are worth 5 to 10 euro for scrap the last time i checked

Anyone use battery world for batteries? They use their own brand of battery made by hyundai with a 3 year warranty. Worth a punt?

Probably. It's good you support local businesses.
    http://batteryworld.ie/

For my car they would charge 70 for a battery which is a good price.

Advance Pitstop were open and had varta batteries at a good price. Even better news is that I didn't need one. Tested it and was in good health. Little run down but a long drive or two should sort it. Thanks all

If your an AA member I got them to come out and replace mine ( ford focus 2007 1.6 ) the charged 70 euro for the privilege .. halfords were 110 euro atlas tyres 90 euro

Do people not charge up their battery when it goes dead anymore? Surely the cells are OK if something was proven to be power sipping the battery too much like a DVR somone forgot to switch off. Charge it up! Thats what I always generally did before I decided a replacement was needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭greasepalm

if lights were left on then yes worth trying a recharge, but if left for too long flat any frost may kill battery, but how many have a battery charger and where to plug in to charge it,if cars are to left idle for weeks on end what about a solar charger to keep battery topped up?
