Mods, not sure where this should sit, so happy for it to be relocated appropriately...........

was recently looking at 2012 model avensis, but family mechanic says they're heavy enough on oil...............just wondering if anyone has any experience on this (would also be looking at a 2013 if buying next year).

The very early models were chain driven which uses abit more oil to lubricate the timing chain. Not sure if the new ones are chain driven or belt.

My dad is on his 8th avensis since 2000 first 3 were 1.6 petrol last 5 were 2.0 d4d. He hasn't had to do one oil top up between services.

Methinks your mechanic has been talking to the experts down the pub.

Would agree with Supergurrier, i had 2 2.0 D4D 2010 and a 2012 never had to put a drop of oil in them between services, serviced every 15000km

He's probably thinking of the oil consumption issues with the older VVTi engines.

As said it sounds like a bit of Pub talk alright. I haven't heard of unnatural oil consumption in toyota's since the early petrol zz vvti engines after 2003 the 1.4's and 1.6's were cured and as far as I know the 1.8 was completely cured some time between 2004 and 2005 and all told the oil consumption issue wasn't too major. The only issue I've heard of with the d4d engines was that a batch of the first chain driven ones had some head gasket issues, these were from around the 2006/7 production years however that was cured quickly aswell. Pre 2005 ones were belt driven. The only issue I've heard of on the newer generation of avensis has been some electric handbrake issues but again I believe this was sorted around 2010 or 2011 and as electric hand brakes go it's one of the more reliable setups.

The electric handbrake is an issue okay. i know of 3 2011 ones that went and my own 2012 d4d went also just after i traded it in. believe they are nearly €700 to get fixed, so the garage informed me.
