Buying a used car with no tax

    If I buy a used car when the tax is not paid up to date, am I liable for the back tax or just taxes going forward from the date of registration in my name?

    You are just liable for tax from the day you purchase the vehicle.

    Also, don't purchase towards the end of the month as you will be laible for the entire months tax.

    Better to wait until the beginning of the next month.

    True, but as an example, if you purchase (for example) on the 29th then you pay for the whole month even though there are only a few days left.

    Better to put down a deposit to hold it and get the purchase/receipt done for the beginning of the next month.

    I agree but on a private cash sale a deposit is no good for a seller. A seller dont care what time of the month it is.

    yep. on most cases youre talking €30-50 for the month. just haggle it off. seller wants to sell.

    Can I ask what happens then if I buy one of those 3litre but 2litre on log book cars. If I declare this straight away I surely won't be liable for the back tax?

    What happens is you run away. Very far and very fast. You're exposing yourself to a world of pain buying one of these.
