Short notice for interview? Any excuses

    I've been offered a place at an assessment day with Pfizer. The thing is, it's on Tuesday. One working day's notice. Bit of a curve ball here.

    I'd love to leave my current job as the company is taking the mick with us but it's going to be kinda hard to get leave at this short notice.

    Any iron clad excuses to come up with. I was only recently ill (unpaid mind you) and I don't want to use that again. It wouldn't look too well. Can't really say I'm off to another company for the day

    Funeral, hospital appointment of relative, something urgent with family, ceiling is leaking (have to stay at home). I am exactly like you but try not to think of them (as companies at the end of the day think of the results and not on the staff - my company anyway) and if the other company offer better prospects and you feel it would be a good position then go for it. My opinion anyways

    Just try and take 2 or 3 hours off for the interview if that's possible? Wouldn't look as bad.

    Jeeze just pull a sickie or say you need to go see a dentist as you have a bad tooth ache. Option 2 will allow you return to work same day. Sorted.

    Or just say you need to take a half day for personal/family reasons. Pretty sure employers aren't allowed to ask more details.

    Gastroenteritis. No-one ever asks for any additional details when you say that's what you're suffering from, or on the off-chance that they do, have a gruesome level of detail ready, and the the questions won't last long.

    No need to be a total spoofer and say your *insert close member* is sick.
    You want out of the job so just say you have a doctors appointment. If they ask what it's about? say its a private matter.

    Best to take the day off entirely too than just go in late ;) Girl I work with did an interview 2 months ago and came into work all dressed up (unusual for her) and the boss knew straight away. She passed it off but the boss knew :pac:

    They'll most likely look for proof. I had to submit my husband's sick note from hospital when I took it and my husband had to get a letter from Paeds last March when our 1yr old twins were hospitalised.

    Yeah, I wouldn't officially apply for force majeure, not least because you might need it again in future, but it's also a web of lies you need to maintain; "How's your Dad, is he getting on alright", etc etc.

    How you play it depends on your boss. You can go the simple route and say something like, "My mate is back from Asia for a week and making a flying visit through Dublin, so this is the only chance I'll get to see him after five years".

    Or if they're more prickly about leave, then go the emergency route - better off sticking with a property emergency, burst pipes, broken boiler, etc, and the guy is coming tomorrow.

    Who cares how it looks when you are planning on leaving anyway?

    Migraine, 24 hour vomiting bug, put your back out, dental emergency, family emergency.

    Personally I have always found "I cant come in because I have diarrhoea" to the the shortest, least questioned excuse not requiring a medical cert that one can use.

    Oh yes they are.

    Or else "personal / family reasons" would just be a catch-all for fancying a days leave for no reason at all.

    Depending on the employer, you can say it's for a funeral - which can explain why you go back looking all dressed up. But be aware that employers can and do read death notices, and have been known to ask for a copy of the death certificate if you wan tmore than one day.
