Hi, looking for advice, my car was stolen and the insurance cheque is on the way. I've a really cheap rental at the moment so no great pressure on buying. I'm looking for a decent motorway cruiser, the two options are a new diesel Avensis 32k top spec, or something more reasonable, around the 8k to 10k level, maybe an Octavia or Mondeo, any thoughts?

I can stretch to 10k before I need to look at finance, needs a boot, travel with kids so boot is a big requirement.

There are some good PCP Finance deals about at the moment so your monthly payments might be cheaper buying new over second hand. All depends on how comfortable you are with your finances, etc which you know better than anyone else.

Yeah the Pcp works out around the 400 mark each month. I'm just wondering if a 08 or 09 diesel will travel cross country comfortably a couple of times a month?

it depends on what your long term plans are. you could buy 3 used cars over the next 10 years or 1 new one.

Just an update, I went with a new diesel, I did the sums and it looks like a fairly small difference after 3 years (when considering the value of a 3 year old car).

1.4 diesel corolla, cruise control, reversing camera, the wife already has one and it does the job, resale value was a big factor

    best of luck with it.
Not sure that resale value works on a corolla unless you go for the base model.
They are much nicer with a bit of spec though.

I had the base Auris for a week, same as the Corolla really, I couldn't stick the base, a little bit of flair goes a long way

It does in one of those anyway.
corollas with any bit of spec on them usually ended up being pretty much Avensis money when I used to sell them.

List price difference between base Terra and Luna diesel is €2655, it's €2895 for petrol. Nice to have the features I agree, not sure you'd get it back later.
