9sd Block on 10sp Hub query

Hi. Popped around to my friend to swap a 9 sp block shimano) onto 10 sp hub ( stock Bontrager wheels on a Trek)...assumed a spacer etc required but discovered that 9sp block too wide! Any suggestions. I assumed 9/10 sp were interchangeable? Thanks
