"why pay for a landline you don't need"

Apologies if this is a dumb question. I am looking to finally upgrade to fibre broadband and I might aswell stick with vodafone as I've been with them for years. Looking at their Simply Broadband package it states the thread title as part of the product description.

Maybe I'm way out here but are Vodafone saying I don't need a landline at all for fibre bb?

I've googled it of course and everywhere says I do need a landline

For FTTC, you need a copper path from the roadside cabinet at least, if you want dial tone then you need a path from the exchange.

For FTTH, the fibre is a completely separate circuit than any cooper path. So in that instance you don't need a landline at all. Unless, you want dial tone.

You still do need the traditional physical landline but the telephone portion of it is disabled so you can't make or take calls on it.

They mean you don't need the telephone part. You don't get a phone number or service, just broadband.
