Mysterious passing of iphone

iPhone 5, 2 years, decided to call it a day without any of the usual telltale signs, no trauma to it. Just turned itself off and decided to not turn on again. Anyone ever had this issue? Any suggestions short of getting a new phone?
    Thanks

Try holding the home button and power button together for 5 or 6 seconds. This does a reset and it should startup with the Apple logo as usual.

Thanks Ninja... First thing I tried! Didn't do the trick; took out the SIM as well hoping it would jar the phone back to life. Think it may be a trip to the store ...

Did you leave it connected to power for a long time? At least an hour.

There was a small glimmer of hope this morning when the screen fired up with the battery sign, tried a dfu restore but iTunes won't recognise the phone. Apple support suggest the USB port isn't recognised when phone is stuck in DFU loop so now waiting for the battery to drain before reconnecting to again...
