    You need a driving licence.
    Can you bring someone with you who has a licence?

    I forgot mine before and they tested the car but wouldn't give me the cert I had to go back in with the license to get it.

    No they've changed it to licence only.

    Licence or passport. And it can be tested without it anyway. You just bring it back within the 30 days as a visual.

    Not having a go before anyone accuses me, but do we not have to have our licence with us at all times (driving) or is that something I just thought was the law? I've never heard of anyone getting done for not having one.

    Please ensure the person who brings the car for inspection brings identification with them in the form of a driving licence as failure to provide the required identification will result in the vehicle not being issued an NCT certificate at the time of testing.

    I never carry omportant documentation with me, apart from ins/nct/tax disc.
    I have 10 days to produce if pulled anyways

    I'd just bring a passport.
    There are loads of other links that say passport or licence is ok, including the RSA.

    Anybody who is presenting a vehicle for an NCT is required to produce their Driving Licence (or Passport) as a form of identification. Please ensure you bring your Driving Licence (or Passport) with you when presenting a vehicle, otherwise the NCTS may not be able to carry out the test. This is required to prevent fraud and to help facilitate investigations and appeals. All data checking is carried out in accordance with Data Protection requirements.

    For bookings made at the test centre, only driving licences or a Trade Management Fob will be accepted from 28th July 2014.

    A licence or passport is accepted if you booked the test through the normal channels but if you book with the test centre directly for a slot later that day then only a licence is accepted.

    “required identification” means in relation to any person submitting a vehicle for testing in accordance with these Regulations—

    (a) subject to (b), a driving licence or passport, for the time being in force, held by the person;

    (b) where the test has been the subject of a test centre booking, a driving licence only, for the time being in force, held by the person or as otherwise specified by the Authority from time to time.
    “test centre booking” means a test booked at a test centre on the day of the test;

    Last January, Naas ONLY accepted driving licences even with an online booking

    Then they were wrong to do so and anyone who was refused a test because of it would have a valid complaint. A valid passport has been valid id since the 2009 regs.

    So is it a legal requirement or not to have your licence on you if you are driving?

    It is legal requirement to have a licence on you when you are driving.
    But it's not legal requirement to have your licence as an ID for NCT, as Passport is an alternative option.
