Is Movember dead?

Is it just me or has the whole 'Movember' thing really died down this year? I don't know one person who did it nor received one email asking for donations. Didn't see much evidence of it on lads in the street either.

I don't want to knock anyone who did it, I'm not having a go. Just curious, seems like a rapid fall in popularity!

you cant do movember with a full blown beard

Beards are in, ergo mustaches are out

The rugby players always seemed to generate a buzz during the November Internationals but there were none this year because of the world cup. I only noticed one grower on my facebook feed this year.

Also, we're living through Peak Beard so there aren't as many bare faces around to grow a tache from scratch.

So the clean shaven look is due to come in around 2019?

Go in town on a Saturday. It's always Movember.

A lad in our office raised about €1,700 as far as I'm aware but I don't know of many others doing it. Definitely seems like there less people taking part

Yep. Dead as a door nail. Everybody was so busy growing 'taches to promote men's health that they didn't take the time to bother going for an auld annual checkup, and actually take care of men's health. They all died.

That's an interesting point - I wonder if there's any data to show a correlation between an increase in men going for checkups/screenings and Movember starting.

    Anecdotally....

Whenever I was asked to participate I'd respond with the question 'when were you last at the doctor for a checkup'. The answer was, with only one exception, 'can't remember', or 'never'.

Despite raising a lot of cash (good thing), Movember has always been about permission for participants to grow a silly moustache (silly thing. If you want a hairy lip, grow a hairy lip. It's your lip).

GOOD! All these cunts are showing off their moustaches and their lumberjack beards and shaving it into different styles, then there's me. I'm 25 years of poxy age and at it's absolute best my facial hair can be described as a pubic disaster!

A cat could lick my "beard" off.

I'd say there's definitely less people taking part, probably because the novelty of Movember has worn off, and I didn't want to go asking the same people to sponsor me again this year. I've tapped them enough throughout the year to contribute to other charity causes and the general vibe is that it's going to be a tight Christmas for a few people this year.

I think too the idea of women doing it this year like it was one of these social media 'challenges', turned a lot of people off the idea. It was supposed to be men doing something to raise awareness of male cancers and raise money for research into male cancers, and I think women getting involved in the idea just trivialised it for a lot of people.

One of the "mo sisters" was actively looking for donations last year, but as far as I could see it just involved wearing a funny fake tash at the conclusion of the month/shave-off  I suppose it all goes into the same pot but still.

Anyone I know doing it weren't giving money to charity.

Yeah, I read an article about how participation has plummeted massively from the peak in 2012. The novelty seems to have worn off!

It was only a matter of time before people got tired of pouring ice over their heads, growing facial hair, shaving or dyeing and being told they have to be "aware" of all the diseases under the sun or face peer disapproval.

Plus a lot of the months were already used up, Movember, Decembeard, Manuary, Gaypril, cocktober. Crowed calendar .

Just like the Ice Bucket challenge and Trocaire boxes, they've fallen by the wayside into oblivion, never to be seen again. Brings a tear to the aul eye, what are all those clickbaiters, like-hoarders and trend-setters gonna use on Facebook now? Damn shame.

Movember is the greatest vanity of all time. Men just want some stranger to stop them and say "Excuse me, you look like a young Burt Reynolds or Tom Selleck"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,904 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Best not to do it unless you can grow a Magnum PI moustache.

You just need an Indian now to make up the Village People.

I did it and a lot of people I work with and socialise with did it. Seems to have died down a bit but there was still a huge turnout at the Mo-run in the Park etc.

F*cks sake, there are several areas of London where, if having a beard cured things, would not only have cured bowel cancer, but also at least four other previously undiscovered cancers as well.
