They've got WHEELS ffs - why does anyone (or everyone if you work for the mass media  ) call them hoverboards when they don't hover?

Why does anyone even want one if when they don't hover? They're just a Segway with no handlebar ... :p

A Segway without handlebars that may explode or catch fire for no apparent reason.

    My friend got this thing
    http://www.airwheel.net/x6.html

Or a Chinese clone of it, everyone that's had a go has injured themselves somehow, also it tends to magically stop working so you fall flat on your face from time to time.

Think on the box it was called Magic Balance Wheel

    He loves it !

give it a month or so til everyone gets these deathtraps for crimbo and all the safety issues come out.
the government will have them banned quick enough.

This why no one will buy a Chinese car or plane.

Give them another 20 years. People said the same about the Japanese cars.

Edit: Just to clarify that's chinese indigenous brands. I'd love a new Volvo XC90 and that's the Chinese owners money that made it possible.

Sure they already have started exploding and ****, thats why they're apparently banned in the UK.

At least 50% of the time you're using a Lolo Ball you're hovering. Somewhat. Don't get technical with me.

They're already illegal in public places, and there have been seizures of importations.

People are already riding them illegally as they are not pedal assisted.

What is the legal status of electric/battery powered scooters?
The use of these types of scooters has become very popular in recent years, especially with children. The legal position is that if one of these scooters can be powered by mechanical or electrical power alone, and does not require pedalling or scooting for propulsion, then the scooter is considered to be a mechanically propelled vehicle (MPV) in terms of road traffic legislation, irrespective of engine capacity. If such scooters are to be used in any public place, they require insurance and road tax as with any other MPV. The driver would also require a driving licence and is obliged to wear a crash helmet. If the user of such a scooter cannot fulfil these legal requirements, then the scooter should only be used on private property.

The one in back to the future was a lie.

They told people that it was a real hover board but they couldn't sell it for safety reasons :D

I remember a kid in our school had told us he'd tried it for real when he was in Disneyworld.

I remember not too long ago Lexus came out promoting a new hoverboard that works.

It looks real but my common sense tells me it isn't.

It's a maglev. They only work over specially magnetized ground.

The golden rule for choosing where to buy quality goods is simple.

if you can't buy it in a bricks-and-mortar store, then it is either banned, soon to be banned.
or of such low quality that it will not be fit for purpose and will lead to a disproportionate level of returns
and lead to poor reputation and/or be loss making.

when smyths start selling them, then i might consider buying one

So they magnetized an entire skatepark for an ad? Seems a bit excessive.

No, they asked a guy if he could design a (genuine!) hoverboard, just for the mess like :pac: He said yes, and the end product was the board you see. To put it to the test, they built the special track and invited "pro" skateboarders to try it out.

The overall investment was a pittance for a locomotive technology company. Have a look around YouTube and elsewhere for the full story.

Afaik, they built it entirely and even added the rectangular pond with shallow water over a magnetized base in order to emulate the scene in BttF2.

It's an awful lot of effort for Lexus to go through to disappoint me. They're not even selling them :(

They hid a long metal rail under the concrete. Most of the skate park is totally useless and just there for effect. The board can't really be steered and just follows the rail, the challenge for the rider is to move with the board to stay on rather than actually controlling the board.

    Still looks cool though.

My nephew sent me a text asking for a hoover board, I said sound. It took me a while to find one of their signs, but I think the look of disappointment on his face will be worth it.

While you're waiting, you could buy one of their cars and take the wheels off. Might work. :pac:

What was the damned point in them making the video then? Apart from Youtube views I can't see the merit in it.

Edit: Why am I so irrationally angry about that video? :/

It's called "science". There's no point in any of it until someone else comes along and sees the point in what you've done, steals your idea and turns into something mind-blowing.
