    A good start would be explaining what exactly is "uncomfortable" about the current handlebar setup? I have a Trek 1000, which is the predecessor to the 1.2 and I can't say I find anything especially uncomfortable about the bars on it. If the issue is road buzz, pressure, etc. there are ways to make the handlebars "softer", e.g. double taping, and/or gel pads under the bar tape, but again without knowing your discomfort(s), no-one can really say whether it would help you.

    Ive steel in my back, thus I think fitting regular handlebars would help, as most of the time I cycle along using the flat part of the handlebars rather than the drop bars, don't like having to dive for the brakes

    other thing is Im not gone on the gears built into the brakes on the shifters of the road bike, I almost think the shifters on the old mountain bike were handier

    You're better off selling the Trek 1.2 and buying a flat bar of similar standard.

    If you havent done so already....

    Rotate your stem so that it is pointing upwards and put it at its highest point on the steerer by putting the supplied spacers underneath.
    This will give you a more upright riding position which i think is what your after.
    Make sure your saddle is also level so your not sliding down onto the handlebars putting extra weight through your back.


    The older 1.2's have actually quite an aggressive frame in that the headtube is quite short for whats an entry level race bike (130mm on the 54cm frame for example)
    The newer versions have a much taller headtube.
