Where to source fuel, best way to use fuel and also any bits which we should ask the LL to provide for using the open fire ?

    Thanks in advance !!

No no and no. If you dont Want to have nice look then block it and just use the boiler it's far more efficient

Is the landlord happy for you to use an open fire in their house?

    Get the chimney cleaned.
Buy fire lighters , some sticks and smokeless or polish coal .
Use a fire guard and get a carbon monoxide alarm.
When the fire is out in the morning empty ashes into a metal bucket to cool down , discard and start again.

So smokeless coal is the best option for fuel ?

No its not, it is far from it. Smokeless coal is all that is permitted to be sold and burned in almost all urban areas. Some smokeless coals burn better than others you will only find this out trough trial and error.
