Rental Accommodation Scheme V Rent Allowance?

Hi, before I go trawling the internet in search of the answer and probably not understanding the answer, Im hoping someone here might shed some light on this question -

Does anyone know if I can just remove myself from the RAS (Rental Accommodation Scheme) and switch to Rent allowance as the potential landlord doesn't want to go to the hassle of expenses attached with the RAS scheme, which are not in place when one is receiving rent allowance?

Its something Im seriously considering, as properties are not out there to be found or don't suit (too small for all of us), and I have found one that surprisingly suits, but is not up for modern changes eg Vents, extractor fans etc (it's an old farmhouse in great condition - which I didn't think existed any more)!

    Thanks for tips.

Im now going to the citizens advice website to see if I can figure it out......:D

You can only get rent allowance now under 3 circumstances
    1. If your already on it
    2. If you were on it on the last 12 months
    3. If you were renting the place 6 months and could afford it when you moved in.
So in your case the answer is probably no
HAP is what you are looking for but that pesky council will put your family's health and safety as a priority, the daft bastards

Thanks for your reply! Was indeed reading about HAP but don't know what it means....or where it leaves me in regards to having been on the RAS scheme with the last couple years.

Edit: Ive just read that I cant transfer from RAS to HAP.....(this is why this whole thing is confusing, all I want to know if this will leave me without support, or can I still apply for Rent supplement.....)

No if your on RAS scheme now you can apply to be on HAP but if your moving house I would expect the house your moving too will have to meet the councils standards
All you can do is go in and ask
Your not going to get rent allowance under any circumstances because "your housing need has been met"

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Fingers crossed landlord will meet at least the minimum requirements .

It says on citizens info webpage that if your on RAS scheme you cannot transfer to HAP though... Just have to wait for council to get back to me . It would be nice to have all this done before Christmas rather than having the worry during and after. However I know they will start winding down soon.....

    Thank you for your input😊

    update:

Rang the council, and was told that because of the property (Old Farmhouse) has no 'firestopper' in the old wooden ceilings (floors if upstairs), we'd likely be burnt to a crisp in seconds if God forbid the place went on fire. So they couldn't in their right minds pass the place suitable for tenancy.

Does anyone know the termination process for RAS? Im cancelling with immediate effect and going on my own to take the property I want, which I find is quite suitable for the area Im in.

Its perfect for the kids and space for their friends over Christmas. The landlord told me he wanted to sell, but that there was no rush on me to move out. I agreed with his termination, and said Id be out asap once I had a place to go. Do I still need to give the landlord 30 days despite dealing with the council? Do I need to give the council 30 days, despite them knowing Im looking for a place?

Confusing situation, and the answer to which I cannot find on internet. Lol
