Repeating a Year

    Hi guys,

Final arts student here. The last semester has been a total disaster for me, largely because of some personal issues I've had to deal with, but I'm well behind on a lot of essays (some of which were due over a fortnight ago at this stage) and am bricking it for these exams starting next week.

I'm okay with having to repeat some modules in July/August if things don't go well. But I'm genuinely worried about the prospect of repeating a year. Is there always an opportunity to repeat exams and coursework in the Summer? Or can someone's results be so unsatisfactory that they've got to repeat the year? At this stage it's entirely possible I won't hand up some of my final papers, meaning I'll score zero in that module.

Thanks for any answers. I've really walked right into this. I've had some problems that have carried over from last year, (I ended up deferring exams last May.) and stupidly, I chose to neglect them rather then getting any help.

Having been through times like this definitely hand up all papers/assignments regardless of when you do. Better to hand something in

Have you talked to anyone in university be that SU welfare officer Jimmy, or counselling about the issues your having to see if they can help?
There is always the opportunity to repeat exams and coursework in the summer.
You will be helped by repeats not being capped like it will be the case for people in future years but just talk to some/all of people I mention above and those at home and you will be ok

On that topic is it possible to do so badly that you won't be given the opportunity to repeat the year? Because I'm in second year and definitely failing but I don't want the 40% cap in the summer repeats

No, I've not spoken to anyone in welfare or counselling, at least not this year. Towards the end of the last academic year they became pretty familiar with me, my intention is to use their services again ASAP.

Is there a particular penalty for not handing assignments in from your experience? Or is just frowned upon? I'm slightly worried that my average might dip below 40% for the semester, even though I could well pass a couple of my modules. You wouldn't know what the consequences would be if that happened, would you?

Yes, I'm taking some consolation in that fact. No capping is a good thing given my circumstances right now.

Thanks a lot anyway. Hope you can avoid times like this from occurring again in regards to yourself. Happens to everyone from time to time. :)

Doubt it. Pretty sure only if you failed multiple attempts at repeating the year. Unfortunately, unless your in the final year of your degree you will have to deal with the fact that your exams are going to be capped at 40%. Both in terms of August repeats and repeating the year. Best of luck, hope you can turn things around!

Do speak to Jimmy/Rebecca and/or counselling service staff ASAP. Do it Monday morning.
Just hand in the assignments, explain your situation. Better to have handed in something than have nothing done
Ive been in third level before. Not handed in assignments/failed exams/repeated year etc etc. Don't put anything to the side. Talk to those who can help you at the earliest opportunity and work upwards from now on

Are the results capped at 40% for repeating the year as well?

Yes. They always have been I'm afraid.
