Going off topic here but did you get the 4255 sorted jimmy? Ran low in oil was it?

Still have it, still a bit of a blow down the air breather pipe, and loosing a bit of oil. Had a lad take a look at it, he said drive away as is, if we went ripping at it, wouldn't know what would need to be done, wouldn't feel spending 2-3k. So for the moment just working away as is.

Waiting on SFP here. If that came through we might trade -up.

My own feeling is to fix it, then trade it as I feel a dealer would probably deduct more off the trade in value than would cost to fix it.

Or just trade in as is? What do you think?

(Apologies to OP for going of point here)

Trade in as it is...let it be someone else problem?
Are you buying a new tractor?

No, Maybe €5-10k with existing tractor? budget max €30k? Would actually prefer to get a slightly smaller machine, 75-85 hp, prob MF again, with a loader, possibly 4345 or 5445. Don't want silly money tied up in a tractor doing a couple of hundred hours per year, however must be comfortable & safe.

    Would you get a 54 series for e30K ??

30k should get something descent...though you would get more bang for your buck if you went outside MF??

Yeah, early years 54 series with loader might be got for 30 - 33k? Our machine worth c €24-25k if in good order. Not fixated on MF either, maybe landini, claas, or NH, etc, depending on what's around. This "will we, won't we" could be going on for months yet.

If you could do some of it yourself it could pay you to fix it. A dealer wouldn't be offering much for it with a fault. Parts for them perkins are very reasonable.

As far as I know jimmy the early 54's weren't great...suppose it's the case with any completely new range. From 07 on are much improved apparently.

I have a 05 one as well. Bought it in 09 and no problems with it so far. Mine is the snoopy nose one and I have a loader as well. Its the 24 speed shuttle one and It's great around the yard but can be hard enough on fuel. One thing I wish I had on it is the econ PTO because it has plenty of power for normal jobs but you have to rev it a bit to keep PTO speed up. Hydraulics are good usually but the lift can be slow to drop if no weight on. (that might just be my one though). The lift controls on both wings is very handy but there's no PTO one on mine and it would be a handy addition if available.
I have been told they can be a bit gutless pulling heavy loads but I've used a 12 tonne dump trailer on it regularly and never had an issue. Mine has the assistor rams and I'm able to draw in three round silage bales with double bale lifter on back and front loader with no problems.
