    Hey guys,

I tried googling it but just found a load of outdated information from last year, but does anyone know what transport services usually run on Christmas Eve/Boxing day? I've just been told I'm working christmas Eve and the 27th of December in Dublin but want to be back in Cork on Christmas day. Any help would be appreciated!

Christmas Day - next to none.

Steven's day (they get upset if you call it Boxing Day here) - Bus Eireann very limited. Privates close to normal.

    Consider a rental car.

    Ah! Thank you!

And what about Christmas Eve? I should be getting off between 5 and 7.

Hi OP, you could get a car rental could be circa 200 - 250 for 3 days.

Or get a Go Car for about 50 per day, Might be able to drop it off in Cork too as they operate down there also.

Aircoach are operating full normal service from Dublin to Cork on Christmas Eve.

Last bus is the 23.59 from the city centre.

If you're going to be a pedant you should at least spell the name correctly - it's Stephen's Day or St.Stephen's Day to give it its proper title. Boxing Day anyway as far as I'm concerned. :p

The majority are well finished their days work by 6 and 7pm though whereas these guys have at least 3 hours left at that stage.

6pm Is the last Bus Eireann X8 service to Cork anyway.

The OP has the choice of several later Aircoach services and I believe GoBE are operating a service at 6.30pm

    Full service on both :)

I'd book online for the 24th just to be sure, I remember there was a big queue for it last year around 6/7.

Sunday times for the likes of Dublin Bus and the Luas on the 26th if you need to get home.

24th and 26th are very much a working day in Dublin so nothing really stops!

For retailers perhaps - not for the vast majority of people. Let's not get carried away here.

No they aren't. 24th is always way down on commuter numbers from the 23d which depending on the days of the week they fall on is itself way down from normal. There is also no evening rush hour as anyone that can gets going far earlier than normal.

Whatever about if he gets an honourific for dying for believing in skyfaeries or not, the main thing about stephen''s''s day is that it's the second busiest day in pubs outside Dublin tow, but like a morge in Dublin

It's actually called St Stephens Day in Ireland. You would probably get more help on this query if you respected the local traditions and used the correct name for the 26th.

    Nope,
Siddhārtha Gautama had the whole cool atheism thing worked out a bit before my time.
Did you have the whole double quote thing understood before posting?

Do Dublin Bus run services on the 26th? Not much point in getting a bus to the city centre and not being able to travel onward from there.

In the world of work the 24th and 26th ofDec are only days off if you are in the civil service
If you work in a hotel a hospital the emergency services retail the hospitality industry public or private transport, or most of private industry then you will be a work or need to keep days from your annual leave to cover it
If you go on the piss on St Stephens Day you expect to get a taxi home
If you break your leg on Christmas Day you expect to find A&E open
Open your mind. Many work at Christmas so the few can enjoy themselves

Actually in the civil service Xmas eve is NOT a day off. St. Stephen's day is.

    Not true.

Civil servants do not get a day off on Christmas eve. The days they get off at Christmas are the public holidays - 25th, 26th, 1st Jan.

yes. In the 4 offices I've worked in in the last 12 years it's a 5pm finish, maybe 4.30 if you are lucky. That's pretty standard across the board.

So will they be at their desks, engaged in meaningful work until regular knock-off time?

Ones working in public offices probably will. But the vast majority I would imagine either just slope off, or organise their flexi-time so that they can go home early at lease.

In certain industries people do work on both days, but I'm not sure that's representative of business as a whole.

From my experience, quite a lot of non-retail businesses do close on Christmas Eve (albeit with an enforced day's holidays, but they are closed), and most that are open let their staff home earlier than normal.

St Stephen's Day is a public holiday and is certainly not a normal day of work for the vast majority of people.

The very fact that Dublin Bus can cope more than adequately with a Saturday service on Christmas Eve and the other working days between the 27th and 31st of December will tell you that there are vast numbers of people who are not working.

    You are all wrong.

    It is Stephens'es Day LOL.

Boxing Day is for Madison Square Gardens.

OP hope you get sorted. Great info here for that type of thing.

    Imagination is a funny thing...

The earliest a Civil Servant, working flexi time, can leave is 4pm.

Really? How is their absence accounted for? I don't know any civil servants that get this.

Could you give an example of a dept where this happens?

Or they can build up enough hours that they can take a day off, subject to a maximum of 2 days off a month.

Its a maximum of 1.5 days in a four week period.

But you are correct otherwise, they can work an additional 11.5 hours in a 4 week period and take this time off in the following 4 week period.

This is subject to needs of the workplace, eg employees will not be allowed time off if adequate cover is not in place. This can be more problematic for some depts than others.

Anybody know what time the last Northbound Dart is from Tara Street on 24/31?

The Irish rail site is less than helpful:
A Saturday service will operate until 21.00 hrs approximately
    Services will cease with 20.55 Bray/Connolly and 21.00 Malahide/Connolly

The first statement is very ambiguous and the second statement contradicts the first one.

They are saying a Saturday service will apply as normal until the 20:55 service from Bray, which will terminate at Connolly and the 21:00 service from Malahide which will also terminate at Connolly.

So the last northbound train will be the 20:30 Greystones-Malahide (21:21 ex-Tara Street).

The journey planner would have answered that question.

Maybe the journey planner would, but at the same time there is no excuse for the information not being clearer on the website, they could just state it in a more clear fashion like you have just done and it would be easier for everyone to understand.

Seriously - the loadings between Christmas and New Year come nowhere near normal levels as large numbers of people are not working believe it or not.

A Saturday service is fine for the level of traffic over that period.

Any notion that this is a "normal" day of work for the majority of people is blown out the window by the complete absence of any traffic and indeed passengers on my bus journey this morning.

The bus was 25 minutes faster than normal, and was less than 1/4 full - this bus would normally be full and standing.

Any notion that this is a "normal" day of work for the majority of people is blown out the window by the complete absence of any traffic and indeed passengers on my bus journey this morning.

The bus was 25 minutes faster than normal, and was less than 1/4 full - this bus would normally be full and standing.

It was a little quieter on the DART this morning but not a huge amount of difference, although the reduced timetable may be masking that a little bit.

In the world of work the 24th and 26th ofDec are only days off if you are in the civil service
If you work in a hotel a hospital the emergency services retail the hospitality industry public or private transport, or most of private industry then you will be a work or need to keep days from your annual leave to cover it
If you need an annual leave day to cover the 26th you need to have a word with your boss because it's a public holiday, just like christmas.

Definitely, drove through an industrial estate and business park on christmas eve at 10am, normally busy and massive car parks full. All deserted except for skeleton staff, about 5 or 10% the norm

Early finishes Christmas Eve and no service Boxing Day on all the town services here in England. Very light timetable on Boxing day into London. No trains boxing day around here (relatively close to London) I don't think (though I think the tube was running). Surprisingly Ireland seem to be slightly ahead in provision in comparison overall. Also in terms of work the vast majority of office work here would have an early finish Christmas Eve or even finish on the 23rd. Certainly not returning on Boxing Day or today which was a bank holiday, are you mad! Most people will return next Monday.

Some Towns are having Boxing Day bus services on the 26th in the UK but I agree there are not a huge amount. No train services in Ireland either.
