Another schedule shakeup on 98fm...maybe Foley goes etc

How about some or all of the following:
Ray Foley leaves 98FM and goes to 2FM.

Dan Healy takes on a few more iRadio presenters.

Colm Hayes goes to Radio Nova.

Greg Gaughren goes behind the scenes on Radio Nova in a further management role.

Richie McCormack becomes a regular side-kick on Tom Dunne's music-based show on Newstalk. (Richie is an ex-Phantom presenter with a great knowledge of music.)

Kelly-Anne Byrne spends a bit more time on Today FM and a bit less on TXFM.

Joe Donnelly leaves TXFM and goes back to Newstalk as a producer.

Gay Byrne retires from Lyric FM for good.

RYE Gold start doing more frequent live programming.

John Caddell from TXFM also presents a show on Today FM.

Jack Hyland is used more on Nova than currently.

Ian Dempsey "decides" to switch to lunchtime on Today FM, doing a swap for breakfast with Dermot and Dave.

George Hook retires from Newstalk and is replaced by Today FM's Matt Cooper, who brings the name "The Last Word" with him. Anton Savage replaces Matt Cooper with a mainly talk-based show, with the odd bit of music.

8Radio.com have a two-part temporary license run like this year. Ahead of the short-list for the alternative rock license, there are even more ex-Phantom presenters turning up during its run. I won't predict who wins the competition!

Morning Ireland stays as boring as ever , and they still won't get rid of the irrelevant 'what it says in the papers ' slot , more of a certainty than a prediction though .

Rick O Shea to replace Louise Duffy on Today FM.
Colm Hayes to 4FM or Nova
DAB to remain as is with no investment
Hospital Radio to expand in Ireland in 2016 with the help from BAI and other interested parties.
98FM to re shuffle with new breakfast show and talk show moved back to night time slot. Foley & Co to move to drivetime.
LMFM to revamp in some way shape or form (badly needed)
Sunshine to continue growth in easy listening market.
TXFM to retain license with expanded coverage area similar to Radio Nova.
2fm to fail miserably in JNLR's but claim "progress is been made"
Steve K to get weekend slot on Today FM (long overdue)
The Funny Farm to return to FM104 with Desperate Dan!
Alison Curtis to move behind the scenes and Dave Redmond to take over Saturday Breakfast on Today FM

Well will have to watch these over 2016. The funnyfarm with desperate Dan - sure the night as well bring Rick O Shea back for that.. Not sure if Andy Preston aka desperate Dan will be doing back to 7pm.
I agree that 98fm will go though a big shift through the year. Hard to say what shape that will take.

I'd like to see Colm Hayes move to a weekday breakfast show and get back to the strawberry days.

I'd like to see Colm Hayes move to a weekday breakfast show and get back to the strawberry days.

I would suggest that he's past it comedically and also probably not up for getting up at 4am!

Niall Boylan to replace Chris Barry on the FM104 Phoneshow.

Niall Boylan to replace Chris Barry on the FM104 Phoneshow.

Or the lads to move back, or move to night time on 98FM, the morning show is a flop. Sorry but I just can't listen to it.

Niall Boylan to FM104 would be a great move, but he's great on 4FM at the moment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 86 ✭✭badgersbelief

I doubt the lads will, they really didn't want to work nights anymore. I just think Niall would be great with an all Dublin audience. He was supposed to be first choice to replace the lads but couldn't cause he had just signed a new contract with 4FM at the time, so I reckon it could happen in the future.

    1. People to listen religiously to shows/stations they profess to hate.
    2. Said people to post here regularly bemoaning quality of said show/station.

Interesting list, not sure if some of it is tongue in cheek.

How do you see 98 reshaping, does it not seem more likely that the current schedule will be given time now?

I always feel that when people talk about change they dont consider how it impacts the shows around them, so if Ray goes to Drive who goes to breakfast, what happens to Dara Quility? Do they scrap the Ray Foley brand and retitle his show if he moves and bring everything in line.

Also why would Steve K go to do a weekend show with Today FM when he is doing so well at Spin? or are you saying he'd do that as well?

Also, isn't August usually the time for change in Radio Land?

Niall Boylan to replace Chris Barry on the FM104 Phoneshow.

    I hope this happens.

Largely because it'll mean I won't accidentally hear snippets of it when going from SPIN to NT anymore. :pac:

I'd predict no major changes for 2FM. Maybe Colm Hayes, Will Leahy and Ruth Scott moving away to regional/local stations. Can't see them doing anything to the daytime schedule so soon after the last reshuffle.

I think unless Foley's figures improve in the next book or two, he won't be in that slot this time next year. Either they'll put him on drive in a direct swap with Quilty, with Muireann staying on breakfast as Quilty's co-host, or he'll might move back to Today FM to take Dempsey's slot.

I'd agree with a previous prediction, Hook to retire from NT, Cooper to move over. Then I'd predict Dempsey to move to Cooper's slot and Foley back to Dempsey's slot.

But tbh, most likely none of this will happen.

I don't think 98FM will make any changes, I think they'll stick to the current shows and format for at least another year. But if Foley was to move away from breakfast, I'd love to see Brian and Dara do breakfast together.

98 sacked the previous Breakfast crew for stagnating listenership, Ray Foley has 11 thousand less then them.

98 is Denis O'Brien's baby as well, so you would imagine he wont have it much longer..

Maybe the golden circle in rte Tubers ,Duffy D'Arcy etc might show up for the little bit of work that they are scheduled to do!!. B.o Connor in 4 tubridy today. Why !!

My predicition is that the competiton among newsreaders to see who can say the word "hour" in the most ridiculous and bizarre way, will continue

Mhm, it's a shame really, I rather enjoy her. I should have said that I wouldn't want those presenters from 2FM weekends booted out, I just think they'd be a better fit on other stations rather than languishing on weekends.

(Though, "languishing" on weekends on 2FM probably pays better than a lot of other stations. :pac:)

The most popular (and increasing) radio show in the country to change its format because you don't like it.

I would like Steve K to get a shot at some national broadcasting. Its the least he deserves for his listenership figures on Spin.
I've been an admirer of Ray Foley since his Spin Days but its not sitting well with me that they are nearly 40k behind The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Pretty poor two years.

Yep, three years. I started a new job around the same time as they started on 98, and that was three years ago.

I can't see Foley et al staying in breakfast for another year tbh. It clearly hasn't worked out for them, and I don't think we'll see them moving back to Today FM either.

Dan Healy will finish what he started, which will see a good few of the weekend heads move on from 2FM and RTE altogether. Think Colm Hayes and Will Leahy will leave RTE.

The presenters of the Cracked I on iRadio will change again, making it about the 20th time it's happended since Chris and Ciara left.

I think Dave Fanning will take over Arena on Radio 1.

They are actually 50k behind the Stawberry! Much less than half their listeners. I wish them well but it has worked. Change is inevitable.

Interesting suggestion re Colm Hayes going to 98fm. Stranger things have happened

I agree with this one - but I do like both Cooper & Savage. However, I think once Hook retires, Today FM will move Cooper to Newstalk. And I never thought about what they would do with the evening slot, but it would make sense.
As you have 3 stations (Today FM, Newstalk & Radio 1) talking about the same stuff with different interviewers.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

I could see someone like Jonathan Healy taking Hook's job, then getting someone like Neil Prenderville on Lunchtime.

Just a side-note, I've noticed Richard Chambers has done a few fill-ins for Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime and he's been very, very good.

On Cooper moving to Newstalk, wasn't he fairly critical of DOB around the time of the Moriarty Tribunal? Maybe DOB likes to keep his enemies closer...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41 Tim Reilly

It wouldn't be so easy for communicorp to move the last word to NT, the bai wouldn't approve of removing 13 hour's of news and current affairs per week from Today FM. I know they allowed 4fm and Sunshine substantially reduce speech content but that was because those stations were very financially unstable at the time.

I actually think this is a really interesting suggestion. Pitting Hayes against Nugent could provide some interesting rivalry.

I think that would be worth a try, who better to rival the Strawberry than the man that started it. Just give him a decent on-air partner and give the show a catchy name and it would be decent competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭citykat

I'm aware of that. Dont think DOB is going to facilitate a previously critical individual whose existing show is losing listenership.

I guess a newer slicker RTE radio will emerge- they are usually ahead of the curve. I hope they get rid of those awful jingles before each news heads- that would be a great start.

It's interesting to see how my predictions from December 2015 worked out:
How about some or all of the following:
Ray Foley leaves 98FM and goes to 2FM. First half - check!

Dan Healy takes on a few more iRadio presenters.

Colm Hayes goes to Radio Nova. Well, he's left 2FM so it could happen!

Check!

Joe Donnelly leaves TXFM and goes back to Newstalk as a producer.Well, he's started spending a lot of time on Newstalk lately as a stand-in presenter.

Gay Byrne retires from Lyric FM for good.

RYE Gold start doing more frequent live programming. Think that is the case.

John Caddell from TXFM also presents a show on Today FM.

Jack Hyland is used more on Nova than currently. Think that is the case.

George Hook retires from Newstalk and is replaced by Today FM's Matt Cooper, who brings the name "The Last Word" with him. Anton Savage replaces Matt Cooper with a mainly talk-based show, with the odd bit of music.Well, not quite, but he has moved from that slot.

8Radio.com have a two-part temporary license run like this year. Ahead of the short-list for the alternative rock license, there are even more ex-Phantom presenters turning up during its run. I won't predict who wins the competition! That did not go to plan at all - there will be no competition and no renewal of permanent license.
