the wifes car insurance is up for renewal.. rang 123.ie for a quote as i have my car and house insurance with them and there offering a deal..

anyway after filling in all the jargon name address previous claims etc they refused to give a quote.. why you may ask

because i have a claim for a broken window on my car policy and she has one on her car policy.. they wont insure her because of it..
the new legislation states RSA wont insure NEW CUSTOMERS who have two of the same claims mentioned in a policy.. even though the claims are made on separate policies...
they have no problem insuring HER... but i cant be added because there will be two of the same claims mentioned on the policy...
if i drive her car under my insurance i will only be covered for third party..

where this will affect people is if your missus car is worth 20 grand and you crash it you only have third party because your own policy only covers you for third party on other peoples cars...
also it was mentioned you will have to be claim free for 4 years before the broken window is forgotten...

whats the point in having window screen insurance anymore.. your ncb is no longer protected by it

also if you are the only person on the policy and you claim for two new windows two years in a row other insurance companies wont insure you if you leave your current insurer

That's not legislation, surely it's just their policy?

RSA (123.ie's Daddy) today posted a loss of something in the region of €180,000,000 for 2014, and that's after a massive injection from the parent company.

Their stance is common enough though, more than one claim type in 5 years is something a lot of them will decline on.

What makes you think getting paid by your insurers to replace your windscreen is not a claim?

It says so in the policy documentation.

It says so in the policy documentation.

Says what exactly? That it won't affect your bonus or that it is not a claim?

In fairness I just took out a policy this week, and looking at the specifics there is clear mention of windscreen cover, that can be claimed and not affect a renewal premium or no claims bonus (and it goes on to mention that its valid for one claim for the duration of the policy cover)

But it is a CLAIM, must be disclosed to potential insurers and they can take any action they wish based on that information. It became an issue for the OP

Be very careful about this - with most policies the diving other cars extension does not cover you on a car you own and your wife's car may be considered to be jointly owned.

I was just about to post that. Basically your wife's car is considered your car and is not covered on the 'driving other cars' extension. I think it's a rule a lot of people don't know about.
