Is it better to repair or buy?

    Hi folks
My 99 Ford Focus needs at least €800 worth of repairs to (hopefully) get it through the NCT. I'm looking at the various sticky threads here and seeing what look like decent cars for around that price with a good NCT.

    What would you generally do?

Did you take it for an nct already or are you doing all the work hoping it will pass? If you haven't nct'd it yet then do that first and see what repairs are needed.

Yes I've already NCT'd it and received an estimate of €700 for the repair work required to address the main issue, with a few other things to be done as well. And I've since discovered another issue that could cost a bit more too.

What these issues are will make a big difference to whether its worth your while to repair or not. The mileage and engine and how long you've owned the car would be a big deciding factor too.

For example if it's only got 80-90k miles and you've owned it for the last 5 years trouble free, I wouldn't hesitate to drop €700 on four new tyres, new brake discs and pads and two new shocks or whatever.

If you know the car is a good one and it's been good to you, you might as well go the repair route as any other cheap car you buy will be a lottery too.

On the flip side, if you've only owned it for 9 months and you only paid €1000 for it and now it'd failed the NCT on primary structure rust and high emissions, it's probably most sensible to walk away from it and roll the dice on another cheap car.
