Can I scrap car that was brought in under VRT exemption?

    Hi all,

Like the title says, in August we brought a car in under Transfer of Residence exemption. No problem there, but just recently the clutch and EGR valve have both gone in the car, and there are a few other problems with water getting in too. Basically the mechanic has said it's probably not worth fixing the present problems, as more stuff is likely to go in the near future. So, essentially the car is a write off.

This leads me to my issue. As we brought the car in under a VRT exemption, it says we can't sell/dispose of it for 12 months. However, on the bottom of the letter we received it says to contact the Revenue to seek permission for disposal. I will be doing this, but was just wondering if anybody on here has prior experience with a situation like this? Car's gotta be worth a few quid in parts too, but not sure I'll be able to bring it to a breakers as that would probably be classed as selling the vehicle.

Hope somebody might be able to offer some advice! Cheers.

Just declare it SORN until the due date (August 2016). And make sure it's kept away from public place. After the due date you can do with it whatever you want.

Id say revenue would be ok with scrapping it as long as a cert of destruction was issued.

That might be an idea, but only issue I can see with that is that we can't claim any of the remaining tax back as far as I'm aware. We paid for the year, which seemed like a good idea at the time ha.

Yes I'm hoping so, going to call them tomorrow and see how we go about getting their permission. Was hoping we might be able to salvage some parts, but don't know if I'll be able to do this and still get the car taken away by a proper scrap place. 4 pretty good tyres on the car, and new front shocks fitted a few months ago...disaster all round!

Just another question to ask in relation to all this, are there any scrap companies that still pay for scrap cars and will also provide EOL/COD cert? Or will the companies that provide certs, generally just take the car away for free? Sorry for the questions...first time having to scrap a car!

Location? No point in us recommending companies on the west coast if you're on the east coast.

If you're scrapping the car then you must use one of the Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs). They are also the only places who can issue a certificate of destruction.
    http://www.environ.ie/en/Publications/Environment/Waste/WasteManagement/FileDownLoad,36811,en.pdf

ATFs must accept the car for free if you bring it to them with the "essential components" (eg engine, gearbox) still on the car but there's no obligation on ATFs to collect a car or pay you for any scrap value. Ring around and find one that gives you the best deal.

    Thanks slimjimmc.

Few relatively close places on that list, so will give some a call tomorrow and see what I can sort.

There's a yard just up the N2 before Kilmoon cross and another towards Duleek. You've plenty in your radius.

Thanks, the one in Duleek is on the ATF list, so will probably contact them to make sure I can get the cert.
