Not sure if I'm in the right area here..
Is there anyway to cash a cheque without going near my bank ?
I have a bank account but it's in the process of getting froze by a third party
I'm not ment to know this is happening but I do.
I can still use my account but afraid if I put a large sum into it that will be it money gone
The cheque is account payee only so I think that means it can only be lodged into my account
I heard of company's that can cash cheques for a percentage of the money is this true ?

Why not set up a new bank account?

Why not set up a new bank account?

I was thinking that but would the two main banks not be linked in some way
I'd be afraid it's a case that if one account is froze the other one is as well

Revenue have some serious powers now regarding bank accounts if they have taken an interest in you

If the person who wrote the cheque "unendorses" it and initials it, someone else can cash it.

I have done it in the past.

If you go to the bank the cheque was issued from with proof of ID then you can cash the cheque for cash. If it's a massive amount of money(over €7500 I think) you might have to give the bank 24 hours notice.

I thought it was 3-5 working days ?

That's if you lodge it to your own account. If you go to the named bank they'll cash it there and then as long as the account has the money in it.

If its a solicitors chq then there is a very good chance its crossed, thus enabling you from getting it cashed. Only the issuer may remove the crossing.

I cash small cheques for a lady but one was marked "a/c payee only"
This means it must be lodged to an account bearing the name of the beneficiary (you). She got the person that wrote it to change it and initial it. I lodged it and gave her the cash a few days later.

She was similar to yourself. She was afraid if she lodged it it would be swallowed up and she needed food for her family :(

If it is a solicitors Cheque it ought to be crossed and the solicitor ought not uncross or unendorse it. Solicitirs are subject to strict rules relating to money laundering which means they are not in a position to oblige in these sort of circumstances.

The OP could open q new account but if he is subject to a freezing order this will not likely help him. The alternative is to visit one of the several Cheque cashing establishiments although I understand they charge a hefty commission.

Interesting idea, but how would the cheque cashing place, lodge it themselves?

    I wonder could they?

Would a Credit Union account be an option or are they linked up to the banks if bank accounts were frozen?

Not linked, but whoever froze your bank account may also freeze your CU account.

afaik the order would have to refer to the particular CU, as each CU is free standing.

CUs are subject to same money laundering regs as banks

So if the person doesn't know what Credit Union you are a member of, they would find it hard to freeze that account?

In theory they could apply for an attachment order for a particular account in all the CUs in the state - about 350.

If it is the Revenue they may already know what CU to go to.

E.g. details of interest credited to your account may have been returned to Revenue.

What's going on with the mods here. I see threads stopped here for nothing yet here we have a discussion about how to circumvent a freezing order which could be a contempt of court and yet it's still allowed go.

What freezing order? The OP hasn't formally been informed that anything is being frozen.

Please use the Report Post function if you have an issue with a post. We're not able to sit on here and read all threads - reporting the post will inform us by email that our attention is required.

I'm inclined to agree that this query isn't really appropriate for Legal Discussion.
