Wilman told the Radio Times: “We want to be on air next autumn, so we’ll come back from our break and get cracking on it. Hopefully filming will start in the new year.”

Next Autumn? Christ they're taking their time!

Don't know if true or not but in an interview with Clarkson he said it's going to be called Gear Knobs.

I though they had been filming for some time now?

I see the BBC will have a two part Top Gear Christmas special this year made up of previously unseen stuff from old challenges. Looking forward to it tbh.

Gear Knobs is the rumoured name

that would be an epic name on so many levels.

Personally I think that the new version of Top Gear with Chris Evans might have good ratings for the first episode or two due to people giving it a chance but it will ultimately flop. When something like that loses its magic, it's very hard to restore it. I loved the interaction between Clarkson Hammond and May and that for me is what made the show special. I really can't see it being the same way with Evans and whomever else is in it.

The Christmas episodes will be interesting to say the least!

I believe bbc's top gear is starting on may 8th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

That's it MM, Top Gear became the three lads. To try and continue the success of the old show with three hastily organised new presenters is very unlikely to do well. Maybe the BBC should have taken a year off, then totally reinvented a motoring show instead of trying to continue to flog the dead horse that is Old New Top Gear.

I wonder how the new venture on amazon will do. I'm excited to see it, but I don't even know how to get Amazon, so i'd say they'l lose a lot of viewers that way.

Anyone who wants to see it will see it, but thats not a conversation for Boards.

4 weeks, so not a lot. They probably want a full season ready before they air first episode.

People will pay for UPC or Sky. Then there's the barrage of packages to choose from. Some will then pay extra for HD channels, and maybe extra for some of the sports channels that fall outside the sports package. Then a lot will have a Netflix account on top of that. Will people fork out for Amazon Prime? Not too sure but time will tell. I know I wont.

I don't think prime tv works in ireland anyway.

Personally i dont see how Top Gear II on Amazon will be a success, Who in their right mind would sign up to Amazon Prime subscription just for 1 single show. I mean i like top gear as much as the next person but wouldnt stay in on a sunday just to watch it. The was getting very repetitive and stale.

I dont see them getting more than 36 episodes off Amazon, I think the BBC will make a better go of it with the new version plus its on television no subscription needed.

There is always room for a motoring program on the BBC anyone who thinks it will flop after a few episodes is wrong.

You're certainly correct in this but what I myself think will fail is everyone used to how Top Gear was is expecting the same thing again. They will more than likely have the same studio set up and the same SIARPC stuff too but the interaction between Clarkson Hammond and May won't be there.

As TFB said, it will be akin to flogging a dead horse and expecting it to win races. This is why it will fail if that's what they intend to do with it.

Ive no idea where people are getting the idea that it will be the same thing again?

    Thats a tad idiotic assumption.

    why?

    1) its only starting filming now in prep for May 2016.
    2) Chris Evans is hardly going to put his name to the 'same show' say what you like about the guy but he has a brain for tv production so does anyone honestly think they would keep the same format and same studio.... come on.

It stinks of putting the show down before its even started out of some affiliation to a man that messed it all up in the first place.

I think il stick with not paying amazon any money.

Well yeah, Clarkson did a bad thing and I wasn't thrilled with it, but he's given me a lifetime of joy, i'm happy to give him another shot even if I have to pay a subscription for it. He's a fantastic entertainer and I enjoy his work.

I live in the UK and I have Amazon Prime; it's a little like Netflix except that, in addition to the base subscription, you can buy/rent titles outside the basic subscription (unlike Netflix). I had Lovefilm (postal DVD rentals and online) which morphed into Amazon Prime in the UK. Many other people had already signed up to Prime to get free standard shipping so get the streaming service for "free". Prime is not available in Ireland and, unlike Netflix, you can't use it when travelling outside your subscription country.

I expect Prime Originals shows (like new new Top Gear) will also be sold to other broadcasters - things like Ripper Street series 3 which premiered on Amazon Prime.

To be honest, I'd say there'll be more torrent downloads of the new show than there will be Amazon Prime subscribers.

You can only use netflix when travelling if the country you travel to has netflix. And you'll end up with a different library. Travel to Spain and you won't be able to use netflix at all because it's not available in the region.

Yup, boards don't allow discussion on how to bypass country filters or any other way to get copyright material.

So, legitimately at least, Irish people won't be able to watch the first episode when it launches? Ffs.

Cant see Amazon making money off it, its an exercise in marketing for the Prime Brand nothing more. Amazon can afford these costs though.

I was using shorthand; I fully understand the different libraries or non availability. It is a shortcoming of Amazon Prime that when travelling in the US I can access Netflix (and enjoy a library containing thins not available in the UK like Miami Vice S1) but Amazon Prime is totally restricted despite its availability locally. Not saying that it's a huge differentiator, just highlighting it. As you might have guessed, I subscribe to way too many TV sources (legitimately).

I'm sure it will be sold to RTE/UTV/TV3 eventually like Ripper Street or House of Cards but it would not be for some time after streaming. Else wise it defeats the point.
Going forward, the BBC might get even more restricted and produce many fewer popular programmes, anyway. The Conservatives want to restrict BBC to programming which would not be of a type which any broadcaster would produce. Meaning lots of Songs of Praise but no EastEnders, Happy Valley or Graham Norton. Top Gear would be ruled out too but maybe not worthy enough documentaries like the recent 24 hours in the Mini factory.

I can see the new new Top Gear being a mix of proper car tests of things people can afford and Evans sort of "chairing" discussions about them in his own style.

Then again I could be wrong, but the old new TopGear format did start to grate a little. The only things I really watched were the cheap car challenges, vintage cars and when they entered FIA/MSA Motorsport events. The format of listening to some celebrity talking about going 2mph over the speed limit when they were 19, or cars I couldn't afford & never afford burn their tyres off started to wear a little thin.

I'm actually looking forward to Evans presenting it. He's a collector, with a real appreciation and pretty epic collection of cars. He even attends a lot of meets in the UK. Clarkson was never like that.

It's something that a lot of people forget, or those who watch for entertainment over content even realise.

While Clarkson will be busy dropping pianos on shitboxes while the other lads slag him for buying a new GT that will be useless in a car park, Evans could be giving us a nice review of the latest Ferrari and explaining why or why not it may be entering his collection in the future.

I don't/ didn't like Evans in any of his previous roles though. He's like Keith Lemon to me, I just can't wrap my head around why anyone likes him or his broadcasting style.

I mean was he picked for the job on his merits or because he was the only "motor enthusiast" BBC still had on the payroll?

I guess personally I am damning it a bit before it starts, but prive me wrong :)

Same can be said for Clarkson. Personally I find him an insufferable prick. And the same for Hammond on his role with Top Gear. He's just 'Clarekson light'. Whereas James May I found was a great presenter.

Having grown up first watching him on Big Breakfast, and then TFI Friday (the original), and also now occasionally catching his Radio 2 breakfast show, I can't understand why you would dislike him!

Big Breakfast was brilliant with him when it all kicked off back in '92 (I think).

For me, he's always been the edgy one, daring to do differently, whereas Clarkson has always just been a bit of an idiot (on Top Gear anyway).

Don't even get me started on Hammond and his put on "I'm a bit of a wally" persona. It was boring and tedious at the beginning, and didn't become any more appealing with age, and if it wasn't for James May, the show would have been dusted long ago.

Can't stand Chris Evans and never could so I can't see myself watching beyond the first episode out of morbid curiosity. I'm not all swept up in his TGI revival either - didn't enjoy it first time round.

Aside from the name which just strikes me as a bit "trying too hard", TG will live on through Amazon's version IMO as it's all about the 3 lads anyway. Not being on terrestrial/satellite will hurt them though as your average viewer hasn't a clue about torrents, VPNs and the like, and Prime isn't officially available here anyway (though it does have some good shows like Bosch) and I can't see people paying for it on top of Sky/Virgin and maybe a Netflix subscription.

It'll depend how much of a return Amazon expects vs brand advertising I suppose.. as long as it doesn't turn out like this:

Personally I have always enjoyed Top Gear. I find car reviews of normal cars can be mundane and it's nice to see some superpower being belted around a track with witty comments thrown in.
Whether you like Clarkson or not you have to admit he made Top Gear what it is and he must have been right considering the worldwide following it received.
I love the specials they did and the 1 hour shows where they have challenges. the Alfa one comes to mind :D
I can't stand Evans at all and I've a feeling they will try too hard to make it comedic whereas TG2 will know already what to do due to the 13 years experience they had with it.
I for one can't wait for the Prime version to come and considering the budget they have been given I imagine season 1 will be epic :D
