Not allowed an Exemption from Irish; what do I do?

    Hi, before anyone complains about "oh everyone has to do Irish, why shouldn't you?" Read carefully;
    I have been living in Ireland since I was 10 and I have Aspergers(high functioning autism) and my primary school never bothered to teach me Irish cause they assumed I'd be exempt at secondary. When I did go to secondary school, I was told I had to do Irish like everyone else. Now, in all fairness I understand the importance of doing it but I literally have no grasp on the language, my brain just does not click with languages. I'm legally allowed to be exempt from it but my school has refused to permit it and I've failed nearly every Irish test I've had, bar my junior cert. I'm in the middle of my leaving cert and I don't wanna have to repeat if I fail Irish. Any suggestions?

    If you were not born in Ireland, you qualify for an NUI exemption, meaning you do not have to have passed Irish to go to any of the NUI universities.

    The Department exemption (which you do not qualify for) is about not having to attend Irish classes. You can attend and just not sit the exams. I know it's not ideal, but do not worry about not getting into college because of no Irish.

    Just don't show up for the oral or written paper. It will not appear on your results. You do not have to repeat if you fail Irish.
