I'm heading to New York next week and was thinking of picking up an iPad in duty free on my back (present from my mum to sister for Xmas so don't want to buy in NYC & get caught bringing it back thru customs).

Will this be possible? What is the duty free like in JFK coming back? Is there much selection?

The dollar is exceptionally strong at the moment. You probably won't save anything buying it over there

If it was me I would buy from an Apple Store in New York instead.

YOu can check out the list of shops here. Aer Lingus is in Terminal 5 (if that's who you're with)

Disagree. If you take into account the 2.25% FX uplift on your credit card and the 8.875% NYC sales tax, there is a very small saving to be made on the iPad Mini2 but on the Mini4 and the Air and Air2 models, it's cheaper to buy in Ireland.

Well and good if the OP can get a genuinely tax-free model in duty-free in JFK but there are no savings on 5th Ave. and if you buy there you'll still have to buy the UK three-pin plug to attach to the power unit and risk being pulled over to pay VAT when you arrive in Dublin or Shannon.

With sales tax and poor exchange rate there is little to be saved with buying in the US.

If I was buying an iPad I would definitely get a refurbished one from the Apple Ireland store.

The products have had minor defects, such as replaced home buttons and are in perfect condition and come with full Apple guarantee. Ipad listing below. Discounts are good.

Thanks for all the replies. As it turns out PC World had a Black Friday / cyber Monday sale and had the iPad Air reduced to the same price as a refurbed one (I've bought lots of refurbs in the past - super value) so went with that. Won't have to worry about revenue etc catching me coming back and I wasn't sure if I could even buy one in duty free in JFK

    Good that you got sorted.

Just so people know for future reference, individuals are allowed bring in goods up to €430 from outside the EU. So an item like an iPad mini should be fine.
