I there - looking for a bit of advise or opinions please

For last 2 years I've been driving a 318 09 With the N47 engine. Fabulous car and it owes me nothing. All i've done to the car is service it every 10,000 miles, couple of light bulbs. Real trouble free motoring at its best.
I bought it with 34,000 and in 2 years since i bought it and shes now reaching 90,000 miles.

I noticed a slight burning smell coming through vents which may indicate some seals are going? Also when i was parking up last week, i put it in to 1st gear while she was running and felt a very slight shudder as i popped it in to gear, in engine (only for a second or so as the gear went in). Same happened when moved to 2nd gear, but not for the other gears.
She also needs tyres soon and break pads as she hasn't needed them. She passed the NCT there in August on the original tyres that i bought on the car

Now i've been offered a 09 Mercedes C Class with 30k miles on it for 15k.
Lovely drive but sadly i'm in love with the beemer. I reckon I'll get 10k for my own car, so ultimately i'll be paying 5k for a car in same year, but with a hell of a lot lower miles, new tyres, brakes and a warranty for a year.

    What do ya think?

It doesn't add up for me. You're going from a car the same age and the same segment.
Spending €5k to move sideways is madness. If you like the 318 you should spend money on keeping it A1.
    Quick question.
If you managed to spend €5k on massive jobs on the BMW, how long would you realistically keep the car for. Keep in mind the Mercedes is the same age and you'll have spent the same amount to get into it, but without the preventive maintanance done.
Could you be looking to spend another 7 or 8k on top of the €5k to get up a few years not too far down the road

    Thanks for your reply

To be honest a new clutch and fly wheel is the guts of 3k.
4 new Run flat tyres is about 800 with brakes is brining it up to over 1k.

I would realistically be changing in about a year or so

I looked at upgrading to a 2011 3 series and garages are looking at 13k

Are you getting those repair prices from a main dealer or what.

Would you trade up next year because of the age of the car

Yep - main dealer quote for clutch and fly wheel is 3k.
The run flat tyres are in the region of 200 each and thats from the local tyre place in the town. Brake discs are 80 each from local mechanic.

I suppose the nuts and bolts of it is for 5k :

I'm getting a car the same age

60k less miles on it and with new tyres, taxed for 3 months and a full years warranty or 50,000 km's

Go to an independent garage and get a quote. Also consider ditching the runflats.

Madness bringing an 09 car near a main dealer.

You will get those jobs done alot cheaper elsewhere, crazy bringing a nearly 7 year old car to a main dealer for that work. Same with tyres, your paying a main dealer for their margin on top of the price of the tyres, go to a tyre centre and price them.
