Apologies if this has been asked before. Is there a camera on the front of speed vans or is it only through the back door window? Cheers

Back window only but can do both sides of the road for 2 lane road.

Anyone out there pissed off with the way these sneaky speed vans are lieing in wait for people on quiet or empty roads where they are no danger to anyone and where the speed limits are ludicrously low?

    Yes.

What times of day, days of the week, do they operate?
The cameras operate 24 hours, 7 days a week.

They hardly lie in wait, they publish a map of where they all are.

The unmarked garda vans are hidden well.

Is this a map of where they might be? Or is it a live map of where they actually are?

Not the one of the entire Island as seen almost from space with loads of red lines all over it?

That's what I imagined. A map of all the places which they *might* be. Pointless.

    Key speed van information

Staff at the RSA stand confirmed that the 50 plus speed vans are manned on the inside
Most parked up for between 30 minutes and two hours.
They also confirmed that while the speed vans only detect speeding in cameras at the back of the vans, the cameras can detect if a vehicle comes from either side at excessive speed.
The vans can also work at nighttime - and just because you didn't see a flash does not mean you were not caught!
The cameras have an infrared beam that is able to detect speed and read the number plate of a vehicle.
Staff at the stand also confirmed that the cameras can now detect speeding across five lanes,
They can even detect speeding vehicles on the other side of a dual carriageway.

My opinion would be that anyone that gets caught by a go safe van deserves it because they failed the observation test. They have big reflective stickers on the back that can be seen from way before they can get you.

If you can't slow down a bit in time or aren't paying enough attention to spot them you deserve everything coming to you.

And if you think the vans are bad (they're not) just wait till we have to deal with this kind of nonsense :

I can tell you I drove down the Kimmage Road in Dublin on a motorbike heading towards town and approached a speedvan parked in on the left near Mt Argus, with its back doors facing me. I drove past and a few weeks later got FCPN in the post with a photo of my reg plate that was on the back of the bike.

All the cameras in the van record. The rear camera detected you speeding so they looked at the recording from the front camera to read your reg. The front one however cannot detect speed.

I've seen them do some calibrating (I assume) when they are setting up. Anyone knows how that works?

I don't but I do know that they record everything that passes. You don't have to be speeding to trigger the camera, like the old fixed roadside cameras. I was caught about 6 years ago doing 93 in a 100 zone. I was towing a caravan at the time 80 is the limit so I didn't trigger the camera. The cookers must analyse the video to see that kind of vehicles are passing.

There is quite often a van parked up heading into the town near me and the limit is 100kph and the amount of people slam on the brakes down to 60kph is crazy.

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Was caught there too, for a little over the limit, now I sit at 45kph whenever I pass with cars 6 inches from my rear bumper, and have even been overtaken on one occasion.

really grinds my gears. Just like all the people that won't just drive past the gards doing 95km/h on the motorway.

Just cause there's gards in front of you doesn't mean you're no longer allowed do the speed limit

Thanks...that's the first answer I've heard that's ever made sense of it.

And that is partial bull sh1ť.

The radar and cam look out the back window.
That's what record's and photos your speed.

Any other cams are cctv for the security of the van
These extra cams on the front and side of the van, were installed after a number of arson attacks.

The photo you receive with the fcpn will have certain data recorded on the pic, such as day, date, time, place, gps, and speed.limit, and speed recorded.
(Provided you request a full photo)

Cctv won't have that info.and isn't used in any prosecution

If they have a pic of a motorbike plate.. they caught you from the opposite side of the road.

That's some trick. How do you figure they got a pic of the back of his bike when he stated that he was going towards the back of the van.
Bull**** indeed...but it's coming from you.

They got a pic of the rear of the bike, because he didn't see the van on the opposite side of the road.
The time he did see the van , wasn't the time he was photo' d.

An understanding of how the technology works, goes a long way to understanding the limitations of these speed cameras.

As I've said before, the detection range is a joke and all because they use didn't want to lose a small percentage from detecting at a slight angle to the traffic so what they do is set up an a known angle to the road and then use a correction to arrive at true speed. The angle they use means their detection is limited to a defined zone quite near the van

I see two short yellow lines recently sprayed on the tarmac of a lay by near me, the speed van parks on the lines, is this a way of saving on setting up time, avoiding measuring the road each time the van uses the location

Still think it needs to be calibrated at each spot
