Mine is the layout of my fridge, Everything has a place. If I run out of something there is a gap. I must fill that gap asap. My shoes must be paired and neatly placed. I find it hard to turn off the telly until a programme ends, even if I am not watching it ?. What's yours ?

I don't have OCD - it's a certified medical condition, it's like the flu- people say they have it, reality is its neatness and a cold

Sorry but I think you should be involuntary sectioned under the Mental Health Act and euthanased for societies sake.

I don't have anything like this. I have various conscious any unconscious processes for the way I do things, but I wouldnt be upset if I did them any other way. It would just take longer and require more attention.
The process is just the result of habit, and they're done that way because doing something in a familiar way is the easiest way to do it.

All of these things that people post with pictures of something out of place and claiming "my ocd is twitching" are not ocd. As humans we tend to find beauty in ordered patterns and so generally show a preference for them. Being mildly irritated by something amiss is not ocd.

In fact it's a gross overstatement, akin to claiming your mild headache is "a little bit of brain cancer".

You know those times when you leave your house and aren't sure whether you've locked the door so have to go back and make sure? Annoying right? OCD is when you have to do that every time you leave the house, but not just once - five or ten times such that you end up an hour late.

Jaysus folks. I hardly doubt the OP was looking for genuine examples from people who have been diagnosed with OCD. It's something people often say when they are obsessive about something. 'Yeah, well you wouldn't joke that you had Parkinsons'. Maybe not, but people do joke about having OCD, rightly or wrongly. This is one of the reasons why AH is not as frequented nearly as often as it used to be. Lighthearted threads should be taken as such if no offence was intended, imo at least.

I'd be OCD about how my GF lines up the towels. Did it so much she faked her own death.

But pouncing on the glibness is the AH way. I think it's even in the charter.

Wrongly, in fairness. Not necessarily because it's offensive or in poor taste, but because it unintentionally belittles a horrible condition and confuses it with mere quirkiness.

I used to have a next door neighbour with some serious OCD - a genuine lovely person, and it made me sad to see how difficult things were for him. He had to perform certain rituals and was aware that others noticed and would wonder, and you could tell that he was uncomfortable about it. We just "ignored" the rituals and never mentioned them, so he could hopefully he didn't feel judged at his home. He felt comfortable enough talking to some of us about it and the landlord would even go into his apartment (with his permission) to turn on the heating if he knew that he'd be back home after another long hospitalisation.

So, on a more light hearted side! My little tick is probably the most common one. I hate uneven numbers, I even find them difficult to remember. The volume has to be on an even number of course, ideally even if I am just the passenger in someone else's car. Problems only arise if you meet someone who has the same obsession with uneven numbers ;)

I go even or preferably divisible by 5. I'd choose 25 over 24 or 26.

Volume on tv and radio has to be at 5, 10, 15 etc..

70-90% of the people I work with are "real ocd". This means they occasionally put the stapler back in the correct drawer when someone has left it on a desk.

Nah, **** those odd bastards. I actually think we should round them out of existence like we're doing with the small coppers. I don't care what effect this will have on anything else, as long as my volume doesn't land on them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭Gaygooner

Well depressed is the past tense of the verb to depress (push down) so it could be considered as that

Saying I'm suffering from depression would the same - which would be bs

It's about people wanting to feel special, they are run of the mill boring people who hope that claiming to have ocd will make them "quirky".

Meh! It's a turn of phrase that almost everyone I know uses. People are intelligent enough to know the person is not literally saying they're depressed and it certainly doesn't make them an arsehole.

I have a repetitive admin job in a paperless office checking application packs. I do something in the region of 100+ a day. All I know is that for some reason, I have to finish on a number divisible by 5 :o

My quirk would be body hair. I can't deal with it. I'm obsessed with it, and as soon as there's even a little bit, off it comes. I have my own wax pot so can do the majority of it myself, and my best friend or people in work would do the bits I can't reach or have to thread. Beyond my eyelashes, I'd be pretty horrified if there was any hair on me. I wax/thread everything. Forearms, upper arms, shave everyday under my arms, back to wax, legs, bikini area, any fluffy hairs on my tummy under my belly button, i wax my toes because sometimes there's a hair on the big toe knuckle. Then thread between temples hairline and eyebrow, forehead, sides of face right up to my hairline at my ear, lip, chin, neck, back of neck so my hairline is neat.

Now, I don't have black hairs protruding from me but I'm paranoid that I'm covered in blonde fluff and I hate it. There is nothing that disgusts me more than body hair. The most distressing thing for me being in a cast was the fact I knew there was 1 week, then 2,3,4,5,6 weeks hair growth on me and I couldn't do anything about it.

Because I don't have to pay for waxing, I can do it as soon as I see any sort of growth at all but I'm getting to the age where I've waxed so much there's hardly any regrowth anymore so waxing is becoming more just for maintenance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,802 ✭✭✭✭suicide_circus

Have to wash clothes after wearing them once, even if they aren't dirty . It just feels wrong wearing things twice. I do laundry almost every day.

A lot of people have or have had things like this. It's presumably the same thought process, but on a much milder scale, as OCD.

Mild OCD, for people who like to feel quirky! But are really just bland

Well are they genuinely claiming to be OCD or just saying, "I'm OCD about...." as shorthand for "I'm obsessed with...". I've met all kinds who say it. Perhaps people shouldn't phrase things that way but I think they say it unthinkingly.
