By the letter of the law, no. Can you not transfer your insurance online?

    I doubt it

    I doubt it

Check your policy to see if you have open driving on it. If not, check with people you know who may have it on their policy and they can drive it home for you at least.

Open drive doesn't apply to cars you own

I have open driving on my policy - it is disability van anybody can drive it - can my partner drive it home for me if I give him a lift to pick it up

Open driving just means that other people can drive the car insured on your policy - which in this case isn't the new car.

If the insurance company doesn't have a phone line open today, could you email them the details of your new car. Give them the reg number of your old car and the reg, make, model and value.of the new one. Also the time you want the change to take effect from.

If they have open drive on their policy yes they can, or to be more correct, if they have driving other cars on their policy

not open drive on their policy only on mine

Your best bet is to get someone else who has insurance with driving other cars extension to drive it for you. Your own insurance most likely won't cover either you or your partner until you change over details.

    This. ^^

People get mixed up with the meaning of Open Driving and Driving of Other Cars.

Do you know anyone else who may be able to drive any other car under their own policy who can drive it home for you? If not, can you not contact the 24/7 claims line of your own insurance company to see if a change over is possible?

OP just for future reference, you can ring your insurance company in advance and prearrange for cover on your old car to transfer over to the new car at a specific date and time. Some will allow you transfer online too. You don't have to do it at the last minute or at the time of collecting the car especially on a weekend when the majority of insurance companies are not open.

The only alternatives now are to get a family member or friend (not a spouce) who has their own insurance policy with driving of other cars (third party extension) to drive it home for you or come back on Monday to collect it when your insurance company is open again.

Insurance claim lines are usually 24 hours, you can ring the claim number and they can often make a note on your file to transfer it temporarily.

Seriously everybody, please familiarise yourselves with the difference between open drive and driving of other cars

As the man above stated. .

Open drive - anyone can drive your car.

Third party extension - You may drive other cars with minimal cover, must not be owned by you and must be otherwise legal.

Fully comp on other cars with some insurers.

Yes with some, but the basics apply.
    Some insurers have slight differences.

Yea, a lot of misunderstandings out there about insurance. RTFM so to speak.

My broker works Mon-Fri 9-5 (as most of them do). I knew that most likely I would either buy a new car in the evening or on a weekend. I still had the old car insured at the time. The broker said that if I buy outside their working hrs, just to send them an email with details of the new car, time and date I wanted the policy to be transferred over and it will effect the moment the email is received.
Worth checking with your insurer/broker if they can do it this way. And surely to know if they will cover the new car before you buy it.
Won't help the OP here but might come in handy for others.

It's one thing the Broker telling you that, quite another to get the Underwriter to agree with him or indeed the Loss Adjuster to pay out on a claim.

Do you reckon if something happens the telephone conversation with a broker plus the email transferring the policy onto the new car (sent as instructed by them) would not suffice? Apparently they record all calls, can that be used as a proof if needs be?

The other alternative is the dealers have insurance policies for exactly this situation and can give you one days insurance. Not so useful if you are buying privately.

If you knew you were collecting your car on Saturday and your insurance place would be closed, why didn't you make arrangements on the Friday for it to transfer over,
