A couple of years ago the media were getting all excited about the new GT86. A compact, fun, rwd coupe in the spirit of the AE86 twin cam. Reviews were all positive but yet theres very few on the road. There's only three on carzone so that complicates my plan of picking up a cheap one in a few years.

Anybody drive one? Are they over rated, or overpriced?

I don't think there was ever going to be a cheap 86 in 3 or 4 years time, regardless of how many were sold new.

It's a tiny market in Ireland, and I'd imagine any that were sold will stay with owners for a few years to come.

    2015 5
    2014 8
    2013 27

    So 40. Ever.

    Just to compare
    Subaru BRZ
    2015 3
    2014 2
    2013 3

There is a 2012 one for sale online for 20k, I wouldn't consider that overpriced, its roughly half it's original value. These cars were always going to have a limited market in a small country like Ireland that is primarily focused on cheap to run diesel cars.

Also the AE86 was hardly a huge seller here back in the day when new too, most have either been imported from the UK or Japan in recent times.

They are coming in sub €20k now... not too many about. Have a genuine feeling 2016 will be my year if they get even a tiny bit cheeper.

I'm not saying I don't like it, because I do like what they tried to do, but it'l never be the icon the original 86 was because of the blatant joint venture with Subaru.

Crazy low figures, I thought there would be at least 50 plus sold per year. I suppose the killers for it are the purchase price of €41k when you can get a better performing Golf GTI for €37k and then the motor tax of €750 a year against €280 for the GTI. I would say I have not seen 5 of them on the road since they were launched.

That's the thing. A lot of people praise RWD, moan the demise of the working-mans coupe market, commend Toyota on going back to niche products with a nod to their past cars, get misty-eyed about a normally aspirated engine with just enough power and talk about bhp not being as important as handling, fun, feel.
Then nobody buys the G86 :)

its the kind of car you'd want to pick up a few years old, but not actually pony up €40k for.

A bit like the way Lotus Elise's were 10 years ago.

Tbh from the first time I heard the performance figures I thought they'd struggle to sell. Who the hell wants a sporty 40k coupe with only 200bhp?

    BMW drivers?

To be fair, the GT86 was never about bhp. Anyone who's actually ever driven one will know this.

I would imagine very close to 40 of the 40 were demo models also.

I really like the design of the GT86, apart from the interior, i think that's a massive let down and looks kind of cheap.

They start at 28k in Poland. Considering we have identical VAT rates, makes me wonder where they got the extra 13k here :pac:

Different market I think. The typical 320d coupe buyer wants it for the badge as much as anything. They then pick the entry level model with "cheap tax" and great mpg. The buyer who wants the sporty model goes for the 335i which performance wise leaves the Toyota for dead any day

Don't think many people would take an optioned up 2-series over a Toyota, then you have the pretty good hot hatches and the GT-86 becomes very hard to justify in the head or the wallet

They look very tacky imo. I wouldnt even consider one for that reason. A design for 17 to 25 year olds imo.

I seem to be the only one in ireland who share this opinion, but i f****** hate the sight of those yokes. I don't care how iconic people say they are I just cant stand them :o

I also think the new 86 is a bit lairy looking for its target market, can't see anyone who can afford one overlooking a Golf GTi or similar. I know they're different styles of car but they are aimed at the same market sector and at the same price point. Expensive for what it is...

I was given the key for one to take away for a test drive. I turned around after about 1km and drove it back. Very unrefined and an engine that needs to be worked to make any kind of semi decent progress. Would wear thin very quickly owning one I would imagine. Really didn't like it. I mustnt be a true "purist".

I have seen 5 different ones driving around Dublin, I think 2 red, one white and an orange one as well as a blue one but it could have been black because it was at night.

The blue would surely be the Subaru version

Your not alone I don't like the twin cams or the Levin's do nothing for me either but to be honest I'm not a Toyota fan in general. I may be shot for saying this!

There's loads of them in Vancouver, all 3 badges, Subaru, Toyota and Scion.

Boxer engine made a balls of them .

Toyota Ireland are also to blame , never pushed them price wise.

Toyota could sponsor or provide a Motorsport package to promote A RWD only rally championship here for newer cars which certainly make things interesting for spectators and drivers alike.

But Toyota Ireland's form when it comes to Motorsport is dismal, Toyota currently sponsor "Cricket Ireland , Dublin Gaa And the irish film festival " F---k tards

    100% agree.

GT-86's biggest problem is its price. Starting at 41k, there are simply better cars out there for that money.

3dr Golf R starts at 43k - I'd have that over the GT-86, or even a standard GTI for 37k.

To be fair, Toyota Ireland just want to sell cars. A GTI helps vw sell more basic Golfs, a GT86 won't help Toyota sell Auris's
Not worth bothering even if they sold 100 a year.

These nail the issue in my view. I was at the IAA in Frankfurt in September; Walking around I stumbled upon both the GT86 and the BRZ. I admit I was curious - as I said before I genuinely hate the looks of them, they could have done way better, but I can appreciate the idea behind these cars.

Well, the GT86 I couldn't even get close - there was a huge crowd of teenagers/guys in their early 20s swarming it and, believe it or not, nearly all of them wearing hoodies. I was more than a bit surprised - it looked like a car park in Knocknaheeny rather than central Frankfurt.

I managed to check out the BRZ, sit in it and play around the controls et cetera. Now, yes it's a "bare bones" car built to be fun to drive, but it IS incredibly cheap feeling and very tacky. Try to sell that for over 30k and you WILL have a lot of them being left in the showrooms. I couldn't help but think that they got the good press because of the badges - if Peugeot, Renault, Citroen or Fiat did something like these cars, they would have been blasted into kingdom come by the reviewers - the old "it drives well BUT..." adagio.
