Wiring question

I recently purchased a new car and picked up a GPS tracker on line which I intend to fit to the car. The GPS kit came with a charger that requires a 12v supply to charge the tracker. I have a lighter socket in the boot I wanted to tap in to so I can hide the charger and wiring behind the trim panels. Is it ok to just break in to the existing wiring at the lighter. There are only 2 wires so I presume it's positive and negative

Be aware that chargers heat up, I'd want to be very confident in anything electronic that was wired up out of sight.
You could break into the wiring, or you could detach the 12v socket altogether and hide it behind a trim panel and plug your device in. That way you're not messing with the electrics. You could get a rubber/plastic grommet to fill the hole.

On a 12v socket, - is on the outer wall of the socket and + is at the back.
Ie on a plug, the + is on the tip at the end.

Thanks colm. I planned on putting a 5 amp fuse between the loom and the charger for extra protection.

I'd just check that whatever you're wiring in isn't some eBay firecracker and is actually safe.
