So I'm thinking of buying a tablet but I want to get a pretty good one that'll last the distance. Budget can't go over the 500 mark. Any standouts out there for that money or under?

Depends on screen size, do you need a sdcard slot,
anything from apple, samsung, google nexus is good.
do you want hdmi out /
I prefer android as there,s a wider range of apps ,
apple dont allow certain apps , eg gaming emulators .
or apps that compete with apple designed programs .
I Think the design OS layout on samsung tablets and android is better .
Than the design of the apple os.
All those tablets are well built,
regarding long life android tablets are designed using standard parts .
eg easier to fix if there,s a problem in 2-3 years .
some android tablets have a standard usb socket for data transfer.
    get a samsung tablet 10 inch ,
    thats my advice .
all apple phones ,tablets get a low rating from https://www.ifixit.com/

They make it hard for repair shops to fix apple products .

maybe get the samsung tablet with 16gig plus storage 1gig plus ram .

    +1 for Nexus 9.

I don't get the need for 7" tablets when most phones are at least 5". Can't really go wrong with the Nexus 9, its small enough to be portable and big enough to be useful. No speed problems etc... and it runs pure Android.

+ 1 Nvidia shield tablet, it's a powerhouse and for that price it's a steal
(same innards as nexus 9 and almost stock android)

My no. one use for my tablet is reading - and i do very little gaming.

So i would recommend checking out a kindle tablet. its good to be able to sideload the android apps i want, and i think that hardware and build quality of the kindle fire is top notch.

finally amazon support for broken tablets is second to none.
