Oil grade query

My wife drives a 2011 Renault Laguna 2.0 DCI 150. It's meant to have 5w40 synthetic oil. It was serviced last month by a local garage.

Today it showed a top up oil level message. I dipped it and the oil is at the correct level. I've just checked the invoice and it states that they used 5w30. Could this lighter grade oil cause level misreads due to viscosity?

I doubt it could cause a misread as long as the quantity is the same. Was the car parked on a hill before the check oil light came on?

I had a 1.4 VVTI corolla and every mechanic around was using 10/40 but if you read the manual it was saying 5/30 semi synth was best.

No, parked flat overnight. Level warning disappears after short run.

Main dealers were using 10w40 in those vvti's too. I switched to the 5/30 from 10/40 and found that mine started to burn a bit of oil after about 3k miles when using 5/30.

Out of curiosity , when you dipped the car did you wipe off the dipstick and redip after . If you just pull the dipstick after the car running you can get an incorrect reading as oil can be splashed up on the dipstick when the engine is running?

I always wipe after a dip, we need to maintain our dipstick cleanliness;)

Mine never burned a bit at all, I always made sure it was at lease semi-synth. I had the oil burning issue on the 10/40 alright tho.
