Yes, driver would have been under the legal limit.

No, but I've driven a drunk passenger a few times.

I don't follow the first option.

The driver was drunk but under the legal limit? Sure a barman's fart puts you over now.

Nope never in the last decade. .I don't do drunk people at all. Never mind having them driving me some where. .

Ps before the last decade i was one of them persons i didn't do which made it confusing :-)

Only once by a colleague in Luxembourg, who'd probably had 5 pints, was fecked if I was walking out of that valley though

Nope. Was on a weekend away in mayo shortly after I started driving and our lift home was still pissed the morning we were leaving. Took the keys off him and took the chance of driving the car uninsured rather than letting him drive home.

    Ha!

    Very droll!

I have a few times...usually drunk taxi drivers in foreign countries.

But I am old enough to remember the 80s and early 90s and sometimes you would have been surprised to have a sober driver after 10pm on a friday.

Poll is very badly worded. Under the limit definitely does not = drunk and neither does over the limit up to a point.

To answer the question. I have often been driven by people over the limit (or most likely anyway) in the last 10 years but they weren't drunk.

I have been in the "7 squashed into Starlet, driver can't see hand in front of face". I have driven after a good few. Rural Ireland in the 90s.

In the past 10 years, suspect I have sat into cars with drivers who were over the limit, not falling around but more than 2 anyway. Wouldn't do it myself, not because I'm so morally better now...but just the risk of getting caught and the availability of taxis.

No. But I've been in a car with someone driving who was on drugs (mdma) on a 30 minute drive home through rural Kerry which is probably a lot worse. Never again! Was young.

I've often been offered lifts home by someone who has been drinking, but always get a taxi/walk instead.

Back in the early 90s. Yes. An idiot who though accelerating on the wrong side of the road as you hit a blind corner was fun to spook the passengers. All this and 17 too. Nowadays, I believe he's an accountant. Probably a bad one.

    not now:(

Nope, but I've been driven to drink by a few road users.

Never been driven by anyone drunk. More to do with not trusting others to drive competently while sober, never mind after a drink. Then again, I used to get taxis and when working bars some of those lads were the first in for a pint and whisky in the morning.
I drove drunk probably daily for 10 years . Sometimes a few pints, sometimes a bottle of whisky. I drove to Dublin once from galway before the motorway was built and got through a 12 pack on the way. Drove on drugs. Acid was too much really to be attempting to drive.
I stole my first car at 14 when I was drunk. Learned how to drive while drunk . Did my theory test drunk and passed my test drunk. Never caused an accident in my life.
Don't recommend it though. Banned in 4 different countries at different times.
Mostly sober people can't drive. Driving standards here in Galway are laughable, most people can't use a roundabout correctly. I try not to be a passenger full stop. Taxi drivers are the worst.

There's nothing that's not terrifying about all this.

I know, I no longer drink or do drugs. Just want to be clear and honest about what is out there. Daily.

No, you could do it just the once and it could be the time you injure or kill someone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

I've never been in a car with someone with drink on them to the best of my knowledge. I wouldn't knowingly do it. My dad was paralyzed as a result of being hit by a drunk so I have zero tolerance to it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,160 ✭✭✭Huntergonzo

I've been in the car with plenty of people who were over the limit, but not by much (1-4 pints say) and I can recall being in the car maybe 4 or 5 times with dangerously drunk drivers, I don't do it these days though.

Admittedly I have drove home drunk myself a few times and there's no excuse for it, never done it when I was hammered though and I don't do it anymore.

Ps, I'd rather get in the car with someone who's had 2 or 3 pints on them than someone who's jaded tired though, that **** is also very dangerous. A lad I was working with nodded off one morning driving to work and I had to grab the wheel.

    Yeah.

Have been in cars driven by people mixing alcohol and drugs. Either scary or really REALLY slow!

Xtc, speed, weed. Never an issue but the acid was too much. Couldn't tell which end of the trail of.lights was the car coming towards me. Was ok after working out the car was at the front and to aim accordingly.
Once had a blackout in Dublin while driving back to Galway. Came around standing on the side.of the m50 covered in mud. Didn't find my car for 3 days. Some bizarre reason I had parked it and gone walking. That was after 3 bottles wine and about 10 Irish coffees and whiskeys and a few pints. Had driven from jury's ballsbridge to the m4 exit before parking up.

Back in the early to mid 90's, there was a taxi driver at home who used to claim to be "the best drunk driver in Ireland".

Knew a taxi driver who was spotted sitting in the back seat of the car, trying to stick the key into the back of the front seat...

Sorry. Don't mean in anyway to condone this. Quite the opposite. I am a former drug addict and alcoholic, you would never know or have known it to see me. I got off drugs years ago but alcohol took longer. Sober now over three years and ashamed of the risks I put out there for others. Just being open and honest about it.

With a tiny bit of Irish bragging thrown in for good measure....

No, I almost never drink alcohol and when I do I make sure there is more than 24 hours in difference before I need to drive

I'm not Irish. If I was bragging I would tell you some funny stuff. Nothing funny there. I've never taken a lift from anyone. I've carried thousands with me at the wheel, most knowingly including family. Like I said. Just being honest. Now go research how many alcoholics there are in Ireland and wonder if they all take the bus?

There is that - plus the way it is worded a lot of people who click option 1 and 2 - may also legitimately want to click option 3. And vice versa.

Thankfully I am an option 4 so don't need to worry about it :)

Several times a year. Drivers of my own age who are quite experienced at it. The last time I drove while pissed is over 30 years ago.

I got a drunk taxi driver in 2011. I was only in the car for less than 10 minutes as I was going local. But the smell of alcohol off his breath was something else.

But of course then I had one of the most stupidest assumptions in my life. Me thinking that he might have been drinking the night before. So I get to where I needed to go (a pub ironically) and think to myself how could he have been drunk the night before. Its past 7pm on this nice summers evening. He wouldnt still have it on his breath :o So stupid I know.

But honestly, if it happened again I would have to say something. Was watching crimecall the other night and the amount of drunk driving related deaths is shocking. I would hate to just walk away and perhaps the worst happened later :(

Sounds to me like your bragging/ exaggerating the usual alcoholics bull**** that they all go on with, carried "thousands" give me a break from this crap. It's a wonder you don't blame your Mother,Father, long lost uncle for your behaviour...:mad:

I started driving at 14. I was an addict at 11. I'm now 39 and sober 3 years. That's 25 years driving, I've carried plenty. I blame nobody for my uneventful driving career. I do understand where you are coming from though.

I drove from Galway to Poland drunk a few times. Stopping to drink regularly. Is that bragging? I'm a firm believer in honesty. I don't think I'm going to win any friends from saying these things. I don't expect to be cheered on. This is life. Sorry.

I appreciate your honesty, even if many don't.

Drink driving was normal when I was growing up and it took me a long time to change my attitude. I think the next generation will find it less socially acceptable from the start.
