Gearbox recon and new clutch price

I'm awaiting a quote to have the gearbox reconditioned and a new clutch kit fitted to my Alfa Romeo 159 JTDM.

Before I get the price what should I expect to pay at a reputable garage (not main dealer)?

The gearbox will not be a full rebuild but any parts needing replacement will be replaced. I assume this means the bearings will be done as they are gone loud.

As for the clutch it will be a full kit that is used.

Anyone know roughly what I should be expecting to pay?

Better off going to a gearbox specialist. Paid about a grand on a VAG a few years ago but they're not very comparable.

    Curse of the M32? Bummer.

Aye, pain in the arse but I knew it was one of those things I'd eventually end up doing when I bought it.

I'll be using my usual guy as he is giving me a car to use while he has mine. I've a new job starting in a week and a car is a must have for it as I'm transporting a nice bit of stuff.

Any other takers? €1k sounds cheap for a gearbox recon and new clutch kit fitted?

Try Euroclutch Baldoyle for a quote.
    I found them very good:

Don Baker is the guy and numerous others use on here for Italian related stuff. He's worked on my Alfas and really knows his stuff. Afaik he's done a few of these gearboxes as well.

Let me know if you want his details. He's based in Enfield.

I paid €1500 for the same work carried out on the same car.

M32 gearbox - keeping Irish workshops busy for the last few years! :)

What mileage is on your Alfa 159 out of interest?

I saw an Opel Astra with 40k miles on the clock in for the same work.

Clutch kit and fit on mine was €1200.
The kit including flywheel and slave cylinder is €600

That's interesting on the price front. AFAIK and I could be wrong the front subframe has to be removed to do either job so it's all mostly labour.

The mileage is 200k km and the gearbox and clutch are all original so as the life of these go it's done well.

Tbh I'm hoping for 1500 but expecting closer to 2 if not above it.

What mileage is on yours, I'm nudging 300k. No gearbox noises yet (everything crossed ;) )

My flywheel was making funny droning noises before it got changed (at low speed) u sure the gearbox is wanked?

It's a grinding droning noise in 5th and 6th which turns to a high pitched whine at normal cruising speed ;) on the motorway.

In 2nd I thought it sounds like the brakes are sticking on but it's definitely clutch/gearbox related. Put the car in second gear and have the clutch engaged or disengaged and there is a scraping/grinding noise. Knock it out of gear and release the clutch and the noise goes completely. Put it back in gear and it's back even if the clutch isn't on. I don't hear it in 1st or 3rd.

Shift is all smooth and it isn't popping out of gear. There is also a knock from the clutch when ticking over and cold.

The car is on 200k km. Mechanically it's been minded like a bloody baby.

Anyone care to comment on the above?

Certainly sounds like the gearbox. The gearbox repairs alone could easily exceed €1000. Very often these gearboxes need half of the casing replaced as well as the usual bearings, seals etc.

As posted above €1200 would be the usual price for clutch and flywheel without any gearbox work so realistically you are looking at approx €1200 plus whatever the gearbox bill comes to, which won't be known for sure until the gearbox repair guy opens it up.

I was hoping the casing would survive and just the bearings would need doing? Or is my understanding of what happens wrong? I'm not expecting a cheap repair but have they developed a permanent fix for the gearbox issues?

Sometimes when the bearings fail the gearbox casing gets damaged. Sometimes it doesn't. Nobody can tell until the gearbox is opened up.

Cheers for that. I genuinely didn't know. To be honest if it was aby other car I'd have sold it by now but I really love it and am happy enough to pay for a decent job. I've a new job starting so fingers crossed it keeps going . I can't afford to be without it and need a car so I'm limited on places that will give me a car while mine is in.
