    Hi all,

Mrs has a 09 Insignia and gearbox has gone in. Just wanted to check if price for repair that she got from a local garage is a reasonable one. Breakdown inc VAT is

    Flywheel €685
    Clutch kit €295
    Clutch slave cylinder €170
    Recondition gearbox €1185
Gear oil & clutch fluid €27
    Carriage of gearbox €50
    Labour €300

Then there's VAT of €371 applied to that for total €3083

Any red flags here... anyone explain why VAT seems to be applied twice?

    Thanks

€1170 euro for clutch , flywheel kit , slave cylinder seems excessive unless it's main dealer supplied. €300 for labour seems there or there abouts ok. Recon gearbox €1185 I'd have looked for 2nd hand box rather than recon at that price. Vat twice ask the garage how that works.

One question I have is how you end up with a 3k bill without knowing ballpark in advance of work commencing how much it's going to cost?

Second hand complex parts like gearboxes are a false economy imo, you have no idea what condition in prior to coming out of the old car and you could end up with another fecked one and potentially bill for fitting one twice.

Thanks for reply, figures are from the garage's quote, no work carried out yet

I'd be inclined look for a car with a known mileage that had a shunt, was written off, and scrapped.

Could save a lot of money.

Maybe in older motors with high miles but you have a good chance of finding a low miles insignia gearbox , they're not exactly rare north or south and still in production. Traynors probably have a selection. And I'd take clutch flywheel and slave cylinder too if she was low miles . Worth the risk for me.

Those Insignia gearboxes are well known to give trouble, I'd have more confidence in a reconditioned box than a secondhand one.

My old neighbour had her brand new Insignia a week when her gearbox locked up on her at 120kph on the M1.
She looked like a ghost for days afterwards!

Sorry to slightly hijack the thread but I've been considering buying a 2011 Insignia. Is this a common issue? Wouldn't fancy handing over 3k+ for a gearbox

    looks about right to me.
he is way overcharging for the whole clutch kit (ie flywheel, cylinder+clutch)
But undercharging for the labour so it all comes out about even.
not sure about the gearbox price.

Parts and labour have different vat rates??

Is €300 +vat for basically clutch flywheel replace ment labour undercharging. How much should it be from a non main dealer local garage?

    The labour is cheap.

The clutch and flywheel is expensive.

The recon gearbox quote is ok if it is for a worst case scenario where half of the casing needs to be replaced.
