It would be. It's fairly out of date, spec-wise, but it'll run any Office programs without hassle. For the usual college tasks it'll do fine (although the screen is a little small).

http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/4483032/Trail/searchtext%3ELENOVA+.htm#tab3. Can anyone tell me if this would be good enough for a third level student who needs to get a new laptop.

I wouldn't recommend, just alone for hard drive, it only has 32GB emmc hard drive which won't be enough for storing files etc and if you consider OS updates etc, would spend bit more and buy better, what is your budget?

More on hard drive -> https://www.quora.com/Whats-the-difference-between-32GB-eMMC-and-normal-500Gb-1-TB-320-GB-hard-drives-Does-it-mean-that-only-32-GB-space-is-available-to-store-data-What-makes-eMMC-so-special

Very weak specs, I'd stay away.

Some good deals here: https://www.groupon.ie/goods?category=electronics-goods&category3=laptops -Lenovo and HP

You didn't mention what type of degree computer science/business/graphics deisgn but my first impression is no, this laptop is very entry level.

    CPU, Memory and Operating System:

Intel Celeron n2840 quad core processor.
    2.16GHz processor speed.
2GB RAM. - Very low spec
32GB eMMC hard drive. - With operating system installed this will leave about 10-15 gigs free which is not enough.
    Microsoft Windows 8.1.
This device can be upgraded to Windows 10 for free. - Just trying to upgrade windows on a hard drive of 32 gigs is very awkward. (speaking from experience)

Screen is 11 inches which is tiny for working day in and day out.

Would highly advise anyone to stay away from the electronics section on Groupon, especially refurbs. Absolutely terrible.

I have a laptop with the exact same spec - though it's HP - and it's appalling. I bought it for literally just typing documents at meetings and it still irritates me hugely with how slow it is in general. Browsing the web can be painful at times, even with just a few tabs.

Until I uninstalled all the bloatware that came with it, the machine was almost unusable. I didn't expect miracles from the spec but I was taken back by how sluggish it is.

I would say if you are extremely tight on budget, it's OK value for €180 and will get you by for the very basics.

But if you can spend more, it's absolutely worth it to do so.

It's reduced by 140 in Argos .I didn''t know if it's a bargain or not that's why I asked for help and advice which I got it doesn't look like a bargain after reading the advice on here .My problem is that I have to buy two laptops and my money is tight. Thanks to everyone for the help

    It's reduced by 140 in Argos ...

Those "reduced prices" or "previously at" are bit misleading. Its doesn't mean that its not been at this price before, or indeed its the lowest price its been at.

That said the price its at when you need/can buy it/in stock is the only price that's relevant.

Have reserved the last one in Argos Dundalk.
Must be collected by close of business tomorrow (Thursday).
Won't be buying it, if anyone wants the code.

Note also that Argos claim the processor is quad-core but it's actually dual-core. Sloppy at best...

I would never trust their specifications. Too many times they've been wrong when I've checked them. If I'm looking at things in argos, I check the specs somewhere else.

Dear god! Just checked out the laptops section on PC World. N2840 laptops by the boatload for €400-500! They would be enough to put anyone off computers for life! 2 years ago you'd get an i3 (or i5 if you grabbed a bargain) for that price, and I don't mean the U versions either.

Just be aware that the N2840 is effectively the fastest atom renamed a celeron. They are like a large netbook if you remember them. Except with a larger screen and keyboard. The one advantage these machines is long battery life. (assuming they put a decent battery in then) the N2840 uses very little power. It would be around the same speed as an Laptop with a 1.8 Ghz Core2Duo (I think). Also a lot of i3/i5 are also low powered mobile versions. So they might not be as powerful as you think. They also give longer battery life as a result.

Any i3 or i5 ULV is multiple times faster than these crappy atom based processors. They're not radically slower than full mobile i3 and i5's and certainly not at normal desktop use - web, video, office, etc are all lightning fast.

    Thats great advice Beauf.
    Thanks for the heads up.

True I was just pointing out that battery life and low cost is major feature.

Interesting to look at the CPU scores compared to this celeron

    Intel Core i7-6700HQ @ 2.60GHz 8,064 (2016) Quad
    Intel Core i5-6300HQ @ 2.30GHz 5,501 (2016) Quad
    Intel Core i5-6200U @ 2.30GHz 3,913 (2016) Dual
    Intel Core i7-6500U @ 2.50GHz 4,358 (2016) Dual
    Intel Core i3-4110M @ 2.60GHz 3,873 (2014) Dual

    Intel Core i3-4030U @ 1.90GHz 2,703 (2015)
    Intel Pentium N3700 @ 1.60GHz 1,824 (2015) Quad

    Intel Core i3 U 380 @ 1.33GHz 1,197 (2010)
    Intel Core2 Duo T7200 @ 2.00GHz 1,168 (2006)

    Intel Celeron N2840 @ 2.16GHz 1,063 (2015)

Theres a review of this machine here
    http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-s21e

Note while they say battery life is poor, it was 5 hours, 36 minutes of constant use. It probably has a small battery in a 11".

I'm in the market for a computer, preferably a laptop. I can work from home in my role so need something decent, work in finance so would be using remote access to companies systems.

Don't want to spend a fortune but don't want to waste money either. Could anyone recommend me a good reasonable prices machine please?

Here ya go; about €330 to your door. Very hard to beat at this pricepoint.
