    Hi All,

I'm trying to find a difficult and very steep trail / road run around the dublin area. Ideally it would be around 2km long with an elevation of 1km. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t think any such route exists in Dublin. You’re really looking at Lugnaquilla. And even then you’re starting off an elevation of 200 metres and taking 5km to reach 900 metres.

You might need to head to the Alps to find that sort of elevation over such a short distance.

For example, the Mont Blanc vertical KM is over 3.8km

If you let us know what you're training for, or have in mind we might be able to help you find the most useful trails for your needs. But as Djoucer said, what you specified there would be alpine mountaineering, not trail running!

You're looking for a 60 degree angle to climb 1km over 2km traveled. Max allowed for stairs in public places is 33 degrees, so you're talking almost double that... You sure?

Look at the IMRA races, you'll get an idea of various routes and elevations. Howth on the northside and the mountains on the southside is about it.

Maybe try Maulin near Enniskerry. Tasty enough run, park at Crone woods and away you go.

If you run from the back Car Park at Marlay park, up to Kilmashogue Car park and then in onto the trail , on up to pylons , I think you will have what you are looking for in terms of toughness . Its about as tough as you can get , but it is seperated into two distinct climbs ...The initial bit is on a quiet road and about 800m long , then you get about another 1k of easy enough flat and slight incline before the really tough second climb of about 1.2k to the brow of thye hill, then you have another relatively rolling 1k , followed by a short sharp incline to the pylons of about 300m ...if you can make it up without stopping , you will have run well ...if you fancy even more then you can turn right at the pylons and take the rough trail up to Fairy Castle ...that not easy to run as there is a bit of jumping from boulder to rock etc in that bit , but its steep as well . ( not sure how far that is as only run it a couple of times )

    Hope this helps you
