Hi, I'm considering getting a mk5 golf gti for myself, but just wondering what would ye consider a good alternative hot hatch before I commit ?? Budget 5-7.5j. Looking for something I could throw a bike/ surfboard into for the summer . looking for more luxury than harcore

Octavia vRS, pretty much a GTi underneath but has a bigger boot.

If you're looking for luxury over hardcore then a hot hatch isn't really for you. but if you still want a hot hatch try and Astra OPC.

Octavia is a hatch. Personally don't know how anyone could prefer Golf to Octy but there you go.

    How about a Pro Cee'd?

The vRS may be a Gti underneath but they are not a very nice looking car imo.
They look big and awkward, I'd never pick one over a Gti.

No I think your wrong, I have a 306 gti already and that luxury, (comfy, air con, leather, sunroof etc) and not so hardcore as apposed to a bone shaking civic or pulsar of the same era. But I'd never by French car again, never

FIAT Bravo 1.4 T-Jet. For your budget you'd get a pristine, low miler that's newer than the equivalent GTi.

    A mk4 golf or amlera n15 will fit a 9 foot surfboard inside !!!

I've owned loads and disagree but it's your choice. I've also owned loads of VAG stuff and thought that it was overrated and soft. I have the 90bhp Bravo Dynamique with all the T-Jet trim and it's been one of the best value and best looking cars I've had yet.

Focus st if you can get the higher spec model has leather and other bits and pieces. Love mine much prefer them to a gti myself and lot less common.

2.5 tax would put me off them

Worth it I think lovely noise off the 5 cyclinder! Also makes them cheaper to buy compared to similar golf! Wouldn't discount them so quick.

Leon Cupra maybe? Interior isnt the nicest but its got more power and looks well. As an all rounder the GTI is better mind.

I used to have a 3 door Seat Ibiza and an 8 foot long surfboard. It would fit inside... just! The nose of the board was up on the dashboard touching the front windscreen and the tail of the board was less than an inch from the back window.
I wouldn't recommend it now but it is possible to fit it in.

Why not get an estate OP? Sounds like it would suit you better.

I couldn't agree more. The interior the main deal breaker for me though. It is just nasty compared to the Golf.

Yep, trying to make something that in reality is meant to be a taxi, into a gti is not that appealing.
