    Hi guys,
Just wondering if this has happened anyone else on Facebook recently.
Met a girl on a night out, got on well and got her number, met up with her for one date about a week ago and then met her again today.
She jokingly asked me if I was Facebook stalking her last night. When I said no(and I genuinely hadn't!), she showed me an alert that came up and was still at the top of her activity feed that read "Do you know **'(my real name)" and my profile pic beside it!

The only thing I can put in down to was that it could tell by GPS that we were in each other's company twice for prolonged periods-and it made the suggestion that she friend me?
I know people "you may know" shows up in the News Feed, but sending an alert seems odd!

Has Facebook started doing this now?

ya it syncs from your contacts in your phone, so the facebook pages of your contacts come up as people you may know! strange at first :)

It can access your phone numbers, that's where the suggestion came from.

If you have somebody's phone number in your contacts and they have that number saved on their profile, they will come up as a friend suggestion. Btw, she sounds a bit odd challenging u over that!

Facebook connects by phone contacts too.

I have people in address book from college days friends of friends (etc..) back then & they keep coming up as recommended.

Four people with the same reply, you wouldn't get that on a dole thread OP :)

It's the alert that is the issue here, no?

I've never seen an alert before like that.

So now tha the OP's question was answered what do we do?

    Hijack the thread?

    Stalk his new lady friend?

    Riot?

    All of the above?

A girl I shifted many, many moons ago (1999) who I have never heard of, or seen since, appeared on my suggestions very recently.

Trust me, no one she knows would know me and vice versa. Has me wrecking my brains, that's for sure.

I think if someone has recently looked at your page they come up as a suggested friend even if youve no mutual friends

This has also lead to a massive decrease in my procrastalking.....oh Ill look up that guy my friend got with 7 months ago instead of study....

    i like facebook.
I don't get the haters , it's a nice tool to keep in touch with friends/family that i may have otherwise lost touch due to lifes pressures and moving away.
Also some people share articles that I probably wouldn't have come across in the absence of that sharing. My life is better for reading them.
Not to mention some funny inappropriate pages I follow which amuse me at times.

    These are all good things.

If you don't like somebody's drama - block them from your newsfeed and never have to see their ****e again
I accuse your complainers of complaining for complaining sake.

Just looked at my own "recommended friends"..

One is some woman that sent me a email about a job 8 years ago that still lingers in my inbox..

It makes you wonder.. All you have to do is email someone and you have access to them and all facebook contacts? I now know all her friends, what they do.

Maybe the thread should be "Facebook Privacy"?

I don't use the Facebook app.. But it seems that is not enough.

Not really though, depends on the individual's settings. I have mine locked down that non friends can only see my profile and cover pictures. They can't access my friends or posts or any other details about me.

Yeah if you stalk people, you will come up in their suggested friends. I stalked people from school a few weeks ago, so easy to go from one page to another. The next day 3 of them sent me friend requests. Hadn't seen/spoke to them or visited their pages in years before that.

It doesn't stop me stalking people though. I trust that not many people are aware of this algorithm :)

...and the people in your suggested friends... yep they're your stalkers ;-)

I hate people who don't have their friends displayed.

Also if you have WhatsApp installed it can probably grab your contact numbers from there. To be fair, they're building a pretty comprehensive user profiles now so the friend suggestions will only get more alarmingly accurate.

Google reads your emails and does helpful things like remind you of upcoming flights or bookings. The bastards. Maybe google is meeting up with facebook for pints after work, having a good old chinwag over who'd make good friends and then hooking us all up with each other.
